N6bn scam: EFCC Moves to arrest more lawmakers as Reps
dump Hon. Elumelu, others
Posted: May 13, 2009
MANY members of the National Assembly were in jitters on Tuesday as news filtered
into the complex that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was
set to interrogate some of them in connection with the N6 billion rural electrification
scam.
Information at the disposal of the Nigerian Tribune indicates that no fewer than 10
members of the House of Representatives are being targeted for arrest by the EFCC in
connection with the scam.
It was learnt that those arrested so far have given clues to the manner in which the
controversial Rural Electrification Projects were documented and processed for
payments.
Sources in Abuja confirmed that the Solar Power projects were located in the North
Central, while most of the Grid Expansion projects were located in the SouthWest.
It was gathered that no fewer than 25 companies involved in the REA projects were
introduced by members of the House of Representatives or their associates.
Sources confirmed that information had reached some top lawmakers that the EFCC
was preparing to arrest up to 10 more lawmakers in the process of prosecuting the
REA scam.
“We are prepared to pick up anyone whose hands is seen in the scam,” a source close
to the EFCC said on Tuesday, adding that 10 persons would be arraigned on the
matter on Wednesday.
It was learnt that four members of staff of the REA were picked up on Tuesday to bring
the number of those in custody to 10. EFCC spokesman, Mr. Femi Babafemi, also
confirmed that the commission was set to prosecute the case against the lawmakers,
adding that some officials of the REA were arrested on Tuesday to take the number of
those arrested so far to 10.
“Ten persons will be arraigned in all and we have just filed charges against them,” the
spokesman said.
