ERADICATION OF MILITANCY IN NIGER DELTA – THE COMMENDABLE INITIATIVE OF
IJAW YOUTHS LEADERSHIP FORUM ( IYLF)
We will like to commend Dr. Chris Ekiyor the President of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC)
and entire leadership and members of his council for the commendable effort of setting up
through the Ijaw Youths Leadership Forum (IYLF) a crack team of bona fide freedom
fighters to check the menace militancy has caused the State and region. This patriotic
movement has on their own initiative resolved to ride Rivers State of every evil associated
with hostage-taking and kidnapping.
We are happy to note that this group within 48 hours of it coming on board fished out the
Leader of the militant group that kidnapped and released Chief (Mrs.) Seinye Lulu-Briggs
the amiable wife of an Ijaw Leader of thought, Chief Lulu Briggs.
We are so excited of this development that we wish to commend this initiative and wish to
pledge our unalloyed support in any way possible for the success of this group or any
similar group that may crop up to checkmate the evil and menace militancy and kidnapping
episode have caused the State and region as a whole.
The embarrassment these twin criminal acts of hostage-taking and militancy have accused
the State needs not be over-emphasized. The bad image and economic downturn it has
created for our State and region can not be quantified so any effort by any group to assist
the government in arresting this menace need to be appalueded.
With the efforts of IYLF, JTF and resolve of the Rivers State Government to keep off
these hooligans away from the State; run-away investors and people of good will can now
come back to the State to recoup their investments and benefit from the economic blue-
prints and efforts of the present administration in the State.
In this regard, we will encourage both the Federal and State Governments within Niger
Delta to prudently utilize the funds at their disposal to arrest youth restiveness in the region
by providing employment opportunities for our teeming unemployed youths; provide the
elusive basic amenities and arrest the infrastructural imbalance in the region. Provide the
needed assistance to NDDC and all other intervention agencies set-up to arrest the total
neglect of the region by the past administrations in the country.
We plead very sincerely to President Musa Yara’Adua who has proven that he is truly a lost
but found brother of the region to release the 242 billion Naira fund wickedly kept aside by
the past administration in the country. He should not allow his enemies to capitalize on his
regarding such a huge fund meant for our people to be counted as a bad debt against him in
future.
These funds if released to the interventionist agency, will make much more impact on the
lives of the people of the region, especially in the area of infrastructure and social basic
amenities which most of the state governments could not provide in spite of the huge
allocations to them in the last nine years.
