Vincent Ogbulafor, Dark Horse Emerges PDP Chairman
By Oludare Fase
Published March, 9 2007

In a last minute of intense political maneuver, former president Olusegun Obasanjo made a u-
turn to mobilize support for chief Vincent Ogbulafor whom he has kept in view as a
compromise candidate in case Egwu’s project hit a brickwall.

The game plan worked, as members of the National Assembly and some elements in the
north vowed not to support the candidature of Sam Egwu who is Obasanjo’s beloved
candidate. Reports said many PDP chieftains told Obasanjo at a meeting in Villa that they
would never support Egwu due to overwhelming influence of the ex-leader over him.

Having realized that Egwu has become a hard sell, Ogbulafor who did not belong to either
Anyim or Egwu’s camp came to the fore as a compromise candidate.

Obasanjo consequently dumped Egwu and mobilized support for Ogbulafor in order to
checkmate the candidature of Anyim Pius Anyim because to him (OBJ) anything is better
than Anyim.

Anyim is said to be working for the G21, the group that wanted Obasanjo to be removed as
the chairman Board of Trustess (BoT) of the party.

By and large, the horse trading of the last few weeks before the convention amply revealed t
President Yar’Adua's weakness. Naturally, the president is supposed to be the de-factor
leader of the party but he is not.

It is very shameful that despite his insistence that all the candidates be allowed to participate
in the election, the selection process which Obasanjo institutionalized in the party still
prevailed at the convention.

Obasanjo and the governor’s forum which has control over majority of the delegates
discountenance Yar’Adua’s order and publicly endorsed Ogbulafor, a situation that forced all
other contestants out of the race. So, where is the internal democracy that Yar’Adua talked
about before the convention?

While Anyim and Egwu will be counting their loses especially having allowed their personal
interest to jeopardize the chance of their state (Ebonyi) to produce the national chairman of
the ruling PDP, the new national chairman Prince Vincent Ogbulafor from Abia would be
celebrating his comeback having being booted out of office as national secretary following
the N120 million scandal that broke out in 2001.
