PRESS RELEASE
THE CONTINUED HOLDING ON PROF NIMI BRIGGS BY HIS CAPTORS MORE
POLITICAL THAN THE NORMAL HOSTAGE TAKING
It is sad and unfortunate that after nine days of holding an innocent and upright stateman in
the caliber of Prof Nimi Briggs these nine days in a situation so awkward to him; his captors
are still keeping him hostage without due consideration to his old age, the agony of his family,
the embarrassment and shame their action has brought to the Government and people of
Rivers State and the pleas of both the Militants Groups in the region; Elders and stakeholders
of Kalabari Kingdom, Ijaw , the State and other well meaning Nigerians and groups.
After careful study of the situation by the Advisory Committee of the Action Congress in
Rivers State the party came to the following conclusions and resolutions.
1 That the kidnapping of Prof Briggs appears to be primarily because of his inflexibility,
rigidity and commitment to a free and fair LGA polls alien to his captors.
2. The consequences such a free and fair election will bear on the old order of carry go.
3. The master plan of this infamous and evil machination is being traced to back to key
stakeholders of this old order geared towards not only to destabilize the administration of
Governor Rotimi Amaechi but to ensure that we does not hold any credible LGA Polls in the
State.
4. It is also our findings that monetary consideration normally associated with this type of
hostage taking come a bit distant second with the continuous reduction of their initial demand
of N100M to N10M.
5. In embarking upon this futility exercise, these agents of darkness are fully aware of the
symbolic and strategic the third tier of government holds within the system – one of the
greatest conduit pipe through which the fund of Rivers State were looted and siphoned into
private hands these past eight years.
Our Resolutions
1. That the security agencies in the State apart from beaming their searchlight on some
of these unpopular politicians in the State so determined to hold the State hostage should
ensure that captors of this old man frees him as a matter of urgency to enable him rejoins his
already traumatized family.
2. That the State Government should beef up security among key government officials
to forestall the reoccurrence of this unfortunate development in the State.
3. The government should not in any way succumbed to any form of blackmail,
intimidation into allowing the old order have their way or retrace from fulfilling its pledge to
give the people of Rivers State creditable elected people at the third tier of Government.
4. That the elders, stakeholders, traditional, political and Religious Leaders, NGOs, etc
should rise and condemn this bastardly act and assist the government to forestall such
incidents in the future.
5. That all AC members, supporters, admirer, and the God fearing people of Rivers State
should embark upon a seven day serious fasting and prayer for a change of heart by this
misguided elements for them to free Prof. Briggs and desist from any such act that will
malign or tarnish the good image of our State.
6. That we commend the administration of Governor Rotimi Amaechi for not being
intimidated by given these elements any form of ransom. We must do everything to stop all
these forms of criminality and unfortunate situations in our polity.
Mr. Okis H. Bob Manuel
State Secretary,
