Fresh Political Crisis Looms In Niger Delta
*100 Civil, Community Groups Mobilise Against Governors
By Akanimo Samson
Published: February 1, 2008
NIGERIA's main oil and gas region, the Niger Delta, will for a very long time remain of a zone
of insecurity and political uncertainty. At the moment, over 100 civil society groups in the
volatile region are seriously mobilising against the nine oil-producing state governors in the
troubled oil basin. Their anger is that the governors are incapable of resolving the deep-rooted
socio-economic and environmental crises in the area.
The nine oil-producing states however, are Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo,
Imo, Ondo, and Rivers.
The groups are massing under the umbrella of the Niger Delta Civil Society Coalition (NDCSC).
Chairman of the Coalition, Anyakwee Nsirimovu, said that NDCSC was not shocked by the
revelation through a sworn affidavit filed in a Port Harcourt High Court in suit No PHE/75/2008
CR last week, by the Traditional Ruler of Konuji in Okirika, Captain Nemi Ihyala Oputibeya X,
to the effect that ex-governor Dr. Peter Odili and Dr. Abiye Sekibo, both medical doctors who
swore professional oath as medical doctors to preserve lives, are key sponsors, motivators and
financiers of Ateke Tom and his reign of impunity in Rivers State since May 1999.
This revelation can only be news to those who are not Rivers citizens, do not live in Okirika and
its environ and or are not close or distant watchers of Rivers blood sucking politics since May
1999. ''What has transpired in Okirika and its neighbouring communities since 1999, graduated
from inhuman and degrading treatment, torture, rape, and systematic mass slaughter. There is
no way Ateke would have done the mile, without these key sponsors, and the cover
they duly provided while at the apex of rulership in the state'', they said.
Civil society groups individually and collectively are on record for persistently harping on the
violent and dreadful character of the Odili regime in the state. This was inspite of absolute
impunity that reigned and the immunity that did not just cover Odili as governor, but by
extension those who tacitly collaborated with the governor in their shared violent conspiracy to
absolutely rig elections and retain power without popular participation.
The NDCSC, while welcoming the revelation, is unequivocally condemning the traditional ruler,
for rising to the occasion at this very late hour, having been one of the ultimate beneficiary in
Okirika of the carnage he said were sponsored by Odili and Sekibo. He
is one of the measurable evil outcome of the reign of terror in Okirika.
According to them, ''this is an absolute insult on the conscience of humanity in general, having
condoned the evil, fully benefited therefrom, only to shout foul because he has been interdicted.
There is an urgent lesson here for some hundreds of other evil traditional rulers that lurk around
the Niger Delta region to learn: that human lives are sacred and must
be protected at all cost''.
The NDCSC is therefore, calling on the Federal Government and the National Assembly to
stop playing politics with human lives in the Niger Delta region, especially so in Rivers state;
where over time they have given support to the real militants top government positions,
unelected as they are, to find solutions to the festering insecurity, which they are main
propeller in the state and region.
Continuing, they said, ''it should be most obvious now to the federal authorities, following the
latest revelation by the traditional ruler, including the most recent reliable charges back and forth
between the governor of Rivers State and former Secretary to the Rivers State Government,
Dr. Abiye Sekibo, that the government of Rivers state, where they both served as key top
officials for eight bad years, sponsored and championed terrorism as means
towards the attainment of power''.
The NDCSC further reinstates its position on the matter, to the effect that the Federal
government intervene immediately by enabling a high powered Special Judicial Commission to
inquire into the nature of the political criminality in Rivers State, with a view to prosecuting,
punishing and demystifying these criminals, either out of power, in power or in
the evil forest.
What has also become most obvious is that no matter how hard they try, the Joint Military Task
Force(JTF), is unlikely going to succeed in returning relative peace in the state, by reason of the
high level conspiracy between the sponsors and their ‘boys’. The fact that no key find has been
made in the past six months of operation, suggest that militants within, are seriously intent on
preserving their loyalists by way of passing top level security information to them before any
strike. Decision makers at the federal level should also take serious notice of the fact, that the
anarchy in Rivers and Niger Delta region generally, has become so lucrative in monetary terms
for all stakeholders, to the extent that the sole beneficiaries would not want to see an end to it. It
has also become an avenue of spending huge revenues that accrue to the people through the
illicit “Security Vote” cover, without accounting for the same.
The NDCSC is insisting that common criminals who decided to use the genuine and painful
Niger Delta cause as cover to their criminal activities of economic sabotage, unemployment,
mass poverty, small arms proliferation, kidnapping, hostage taking, mass
killing and the infliction of a general state of insecurity of lives and property, must be made to
face the full measure of the legal process, with a view to punitive punishment, no matter how
highly placed in society.
The NDCSCis also insisting that the situation in Rivers State does not merit Truth and
Reconciliation Commission (TRC). TRC in the case of Rivers state can only amount to
deliberate cover-up or shielding of criminals from judicial punishment, in view of the
critical revelations.
These people are common criminals, who have nothing to do with the germane and painful
Niger Delta region’s cause; but premedidated murderers and election riggers for inordinate
power, with the object of stealing local government revenues, and leave ordinary unsuspecting
Niger Deltans in abosolute poverty. Until perpetrators of
these heinous crimes against the conscience of all humankind, instead of being demystified,
punished and removed from the political scene; are allowed to be judges in their own cause,
trust, confidence, peace, investment and economic development would continue to elude the
region and country
