PRESS RELEASE
REACTING AND CORRECTING SOME OF THE WRONG INSINUATIONS AND
MISCONCEPTIONS BASED ON THE REALIGNMENT OF POLITICAL FORCES IN
RIVERS STATE – OUR TRUE POSITION
Our attention has being drawn to various publications whose interpretations and insinuations
since we resolved for the peace and progress of Rivers State to realign forces with the man of
the moment in Rivers State politics, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi sounds ridiculous and hard to
believe like the malicious, ill-advised, myopic, unethical and calamitous attempt by a Port
Harcourt based weekly tabloid – The Weekly star Newspaper geared towards maligning,
ridiculing and assassinating the character, personality and image of Engr. Tonye Princewill the
Action Congress gubernatorial candidate in the last April polls.
The paper had in its publication of 20th November, 2007 alleged that the Action Congress
gubernatorial Candidate in the last April polls, Prince Tonye Princewill had collected ‘a
whopping sum of N500M’ as a settlement fee in order to withdraw his petition from the
Election Tribunal and apart from that is now taking refuge at the Presidential Lodge of the
Government House of Rivers State to avoid ‘his numerous supporters from venting their
anger on him for dumping them midstream’ To us, we see this publication as not only
malicious but concoction of falsehood that can only come out of a confused and jaundiced
mind. To demonstrate how incoherent, inconsistent and misleading the nameless Reporter
could be, he in another paragraph stated that ‘however Mr. Tonye Princewill while debunking
the allegation at a press briefing last Tuesday at the Presidential Lodge, Government House,
the Kalabari born politician denied having received any gratification stressing that his decision
to join the government of Amaechi was to join hands with him in building a united, peaceful
and prosperous state., Which of the two stands of this confused Reporter is to be taking-
collecting a whopping sum of N500M’ or what Princewill told the press in his press briefing?
The public could recall that immediately Governor Amaechi assumed office on 25th October,
2007 that the administration of Sir Celestine Omehia left only the sum of N100M in the
coffers of the government, a fact he reaffirmed on 23rd November while reacting to Omehia’
s recent outburst coupled with the fact that the statutory subvention of November is yet to be
collected by the State from where then did Governor Rotimi Amaechi got the ‘whopping sum
of N500M’ to give to Tonye Princewill in order for him to withdraw his petition, if not that
some Journalists can be so dubious to do anything in order to tarnish the good image of this
noble pen profession. It may interest our good friend in the Weekly star to note that as a
principal partner in the administration of Rotimi Amaechi, Ptincewill is totally at liberty to stay
at any part of the Government House if Governor Amaechi so wishes including the
Presidential Lodge and not that he is dodging from any body as the publication tried to
portray. This notwithstanding, the Government House of Rivers state belongs to the people
of Rivers State and not an exclusive property of any special class of people that excludes the
likes of the Princewills. We thank the Reporter for accepting the fact that Tonye Princewill
has ‘numerous supporters’ but what he may not know is that Tonye Princewill has not only
the support of all AC Members in Rivers State in his drive to collaborate with Amaechi in to
taking the State to the next level but the approval of both Atiku Abubakar the AC National
Leader and other concerned national Leadership of AC so the reporter’s imaginary suspension
of TP from AC will always be a day dream.
At the moment, Tonye Princewill is the Coordinator of the Conference of Nigerian Political
Parties (CNPP) in Rivers State and has chaired about three meetings of this Committee of
political parties in Rivers State from where then did this jaundiced minded reporter got his fact
that the ‘coalition of opposition parties in Rivers State have equally taken a swipe on Tonye
Princewill on his subversive activities capable of weakening the opposition and urged him to
retrace his steps’ if not that he is fronting for the coming back of Odili oligarchy to the State.
The mere mention of N500M by the Weekly star Reporter as our entitlement for all our
labour, struggle and efforts to establishing AC as a party in Rivers State is to us insulting,
disgusting, debasing, mortifying, atrocious and unfortunate- does this figure equates the
funds expended to traverse the whole Rivers State to plant the Party or the death warrant on
some of us or for paying our Lawyers for their services to purse our Election petition in the
Tribunal or the daily researches on how to ouster Omehia and erase all the evil associated with
the Odili oligarchy from the State! To associate our Leader with such a miserable amount of
money for all that we did is to us very unfortunate. We have stated time without number that
what we did in assisting Governor Amaechi to succeed was done without any condition
attached and we are not the types that associate our services to our people with hope of
receiving mundane things in return.
National Network a tabloid also based in Port- Harcourt in its publication of 22nd November
improved on the position of Weekly star by alleging that Tonye Princewill has being finally
suspended from Action Congress based on information that emanated from the suspended AC
Chairman in Rivers State, Mr. Mmuen Kpagane who is still serving his suspension since 29th
October, 2007 for anti-party activities duly signed and approved by all members of the State
EXCO and Elder GPI Tubonemi his Deputy has being acting in the capacity as the State
Chairman since then. In that case any body dealing with Mr. Kpagane on issues involving AC
in Rivers State is doing so at his or her own peril. Engr. Tonye Princewill is still the AC
Leader in Rivers State and still has the overwhelming support of all member of AC within and
outside the State for all his actions so far with Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
We will like to reiterate, for avoidance of doubt that we have no other State to call our own
expects Rivers State and we have no apology to make to any person or group of persons in
order to participate in any act that will move the State forward. Our support for Gov.
Amaechi is total and no amount of treachery, blackmail and falsehood will stop this new
strategy and union geared towards liberating the State from a clique that has held it spell
bound in poverty these past unprogressive eight years. God has entrusted the destiny and
future of Rivers State into the hands of these two great visionary Leaders that will surely take
us to the promise land.
We have established a very cordial and enduring relationship with the press and we are not
ready to jeopardize such an understanding because of the antics and pedigree of some of our
friends who have decided to blackmail and stab us at the back by portraying us in a borrowed
robe. With these types of reports we would have gone to the court to seek redress but
considering the past great works done on our behalf by the Weekly star and the National
Network newspapers in the past, we will restrain ourselves believing that such organizations
will cross-check their facts before going to the press next time and resist attempts by
confused politicians using heir media Houses to witch-hunt innocent and committed politicians
who wants to take the State to the next level. We expect attacks based on our new political
conviction and stand but we plead that such attacks should be rooted with facts and not on
imaginations of a reporter.
