Either Way, Ribadu Must Die!
by Deji Saanu

I had read a book, in my secondary school days, whose Title was "The Devils Alternative", by
Fredrick Forsythe and one quote therein, which still bemuse me, is that which says "Either
way, MEN would die; Its the Devil's Alternative"!  And Nuhu Ribadu is the man. Much has
been said about him, some to deflect the flak, some to justify the action, some to rubbish and
tarnish, some to sustain the action and some to disguise the 'centre of the storm'.

In as much as Ribadu is not the only one that can do the job, to the best of my knowledge, he
is the only one that has to-date, done it at EFCC. ICPC could have done it but did not. Those
who use his past, his readiness to prosecute mostly those who are on the wrong-side of OBJ,
his in-ability to "kill" the very big fish, his lack of 'documentation', his non-adherence to "due
nonsense" an the 'new song' called rule of law, to justify his sudden removal are either
hypocrites or  plain mischief makers; in Ribadu's circumstance, what would they have done?
Would they have done better? Here is a "Chairman" that operates under the "EFCC Act" and
whose very existence depends on the Presidents "opinion" of his performance! What are we
saying about that portion of the Act itself?  Would you send a Soldier to war and with-hold his
Rifle or Ammunition? We are all to familiar with OBJ's 'use and dump' style of government:
Ask those who formed and nurtured the PDP while Baba was still cooling his heels in  prison.

We are all too familiar with his vindictive and vendetta-prone nature. We are all to exposed to
his holier than God, I-Too-Know attitude to decision making. We will be right on the spot if we
conclude that "You either do Baba's bidding or you are out", even when Baba has no right
to kick you out for expressing a dissenting opinion, how much more a Ribadu, who he
personally hand-picked, installed, funded, promoted and sustained!! Cant you see  that on each
account, it was simply a case of "Esau's hand but Jacob's face"? Baba was actually the
chairman; and! who says Yar'Ardua cannot be his own "chairman" too? "A thief is a thief, no
matter which or whose camp he belongs to". The less of these Kleptomaniacs we have
roaming around freely, the better  it is for the future of our kids: They've already ruined ours
but at least, let the rot stop in this generation.

That Ribadu was even able to put some Morbid Rogues in detention, Rogues that have stolen
enough to buy every "naira-hungry'" S.A.N without a conscience, to defend them, Rogues that
have powerful members in their 'association-of-thieves', men who are desperate to keep the
status-quo and would kill, maim and destroy people's credibility just to keep innocent Nigerians
in penury, these are the kind of people we have set  Ribadu against: How many of us will
honestly make this type of responsibility our 'first-choice job' and do it with his kind of passion?
If Baba say's, in his unusually crude vocabulary and 'throat-clearing' manner of speaking
"Nuhu, l have done 'good business' with Mr. X but he  wants to renege on our agreement, (just
like Atiku did!) go and pick  him up (of course, with the level of corruption in our country,
barely will you find a politician that has not soiled his hands one way or the other! Baba will
simply present his 'accumulated dossier' on such person, to Ribadu.).

Tell me and tell me honestly, can Ribadu, or if any of Ribadu's critics  are in his shoes at that
moment, can they say "No, Mr. President, you are also guilty and an accomplice in this matter,
l have to arrest you, as well as the Mr. X? Will Ribadu last  the next five minutes in that
office? and if he doesn't, can we be able to attribute the 'little success' Nigeria has recorded in
the fight against corruption today, to this country or have we forgotten that most of the 'big
fishes' have this monster called "immunity" as their iron shield?

Its either, as the Yorubas will say, "drive away the rampaging wolffirst and then come back
later to chastise the erring chicken", to do otherwise is to loose focus and loose the battle. In as
much as l was a vitriolic critic of Ribadu during the OBJ days, l was mindful of his
"operating environment";  but we have to put the man on his toes. And to think you can "fight
the crafty, rich and very dangerously-lawless Kleptomaniacs, using rule of law and due
process" is the greatest deceit ever foisted on Nigerians. The "Law is an Ass", more so the
Nigerian constitution, metaphorically speaking, is a blind, and mentally retarded three-legged
Ass!!.

I can steal a Judge's wristwatch, on his table, right there in front of him, in the court and with
a good purse and the service of a good S.A.N, the judge will have to apologize to me, for me
not to sue him for libel, if he dares accuse me! Yes, rule of law and due process: Where is
the proof? Which forensic Lab will prove that its my finger prints? Where is the 'evidential
standard' CCTV footage that showed me picking the watch (the judge's word? witness that can
be bought at a good sum? his receipt of purchase? wont l get another one from the original
seller if one from 'oluwole' would not do!.....). Like they say, "Chronic problems require
chronic solutions" and since we face an "uncommon challenge, we need uncommon methods
to at least, stabilize the situation".

In countries where 'rule of law and due process' are applied and  practiced to the letter,
"structures and institutions" have not only have been put in place, they have been tested,
improved and firmly established. That's why an AGF can write a "bail-letter' on behalf of an
accused, to the U.K authorities, they honor it and yet it does not constitute the
end of the trial!  And who says “genuinely repented” (born against, as he Christian faith
christens them!) individuals cannot surpass our expectations? It is not uncommon for Ribadu
to have realized that he now operates without the “Yoke of OBJ” around his neck, except for
the fear of another “possible yoke”  from the occupant of Aso Rock, he may now make
peace with his conscience and do the job as it ought to be done, without fear or favor! The
Devil you know at times, is better than he Angel you are yet to fathom!!

And l hear that Iyabo Obasanjo, a.k.a Mrs. Demilola Akinlawon, did respond positively to her
recent EFCC invitation but when the rumors of Ribadu’s removal became authentic, she did a
U-turn to her story, using one ignoble “Proff”-spokesman. Having publicly confessed to using
the pseudonym, she now denied and said it was somebody else? So, removal  of Ribadu can
even encourage and embolden such insults? Its not about  Ribadu as a person, its not about
whether he is a Policeman first, its not about whether he is irreplaceable (can anybody be
irreplaceable in a country of over 150Million?), its not about whether Yar’Adua has the right to
replace him or not, its not about what he has done to annoy some people in the past, its about
“the message, the impression we create and send” which says “the corrupt are stronger than
any law of the land and will always find a way to escape punishment”!

If l may ask, will the new man not be accused and guilty of the same 'issues' that Ribadu has
been accused of? Under the same "operating environment", can he do what Ribadu has not
done or put the other way round, can he even do 'as much as the little' that Ribadu has done?
In his dreams, will he, can he, stand-up against and confront the President (or his cronies), if
need be, on whose beck and call, his continued existence as "EFCC Chairman" depends?
If my President, and respectfully, wants to make a mockery of himself, let him continue to
listen to some of the wolves and agents of corruption he has surrounded himself with (their
past records, even in a Nigeria that is averse to keeping records, speaks for them!), History and
posterity will be his judge but our children's future will be the casualty.

Deji Saanu (Just thinking aloud!)
