It is now a year and one month since I came to know Tonye Princwill. My formal contact with this enigma of a
personality was a result of being released by my Principal and the National Leader of Action Congress, His Excellency
Atiku Abubakar to assist him (Princewill) in his desire to govern Rivers State . I must confess that in my interaction
with human beings within my fifty years of sojourn on earth, I have come across very few strong-willed personalities
comparable to Tonye Princewill. But of them all, none can be described as an unassuming but very dogged in the
pursuit of any course he believes to a fault. An accomplished academician, an orator and a patriot, a charismatic
politician, an outstanding philanthropist, a voice for the voiceless, a study in humility, a great manager of human
resources, a fearless warrior and unassuming humanist, foresighted and a believer in a united, stronger and viable
Rivers State.
This special gift to the people of Rivers State and Nigeria is the only child of his father, HM King Prof. T. J. T.
Princewil, Amachree XI the famous Amanayanabo of Kalabari kingdom, a renowned Scholar and first class Royal
father in Rivers State . This young man is married to Rosemary (nee Iyamabo) who hails from Uromi in Edo State and
is the proud parent/father of twin boys, Teetee (Tamunotonye) and Teepee (Tamunopreye). The boys are both seven
years of age. His desire to project and propagate his ideals and vision for the emancipation of his people is legendary.
His new vision for building the new Rivers State of his dream forced him into politics after making his mark in business.
This young man’s entry into the politics of Rivers State took everybody by storm and by the time the people could
settle down to know what he was up to he had already demolished the bulldozer and established politician Sgt. Awuse
to become the undisputed flag bearer of one of the major political parties in Nigeria- the Action Congress, a party
founded by great democrats to challenge the undemocratic tendencies of the ruling political party in Nigeria, the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP). Being an enigma of sorts, his entrance into politics came with a lot of insinuations as no body
gave him a chance considering the enormous, intimidating and overwhelming powers of the retrogressive clique in
charge of the State at the time. But as a true Trojan with a vision he preferred it that way and continued his campaign
riddled with issues and pragmatic messages. He did not only surprised himself but critics, opponents, established
politicians in the State, admirers and the leadership of AC both at the State and National levels that today he has become
not only the Prince of Niger Delta Politics but the ˜bride” of Niger Delta politics, if I may use the famous words of the
great Zik of Africa as he has become a hot cake desired by both his opponents and those that have underestimated him
in the first place.
The AC he single handedly funded, nurtured, watered, and built is the only viable political platform in Rivers State being
sought-after by the great names in politics of yesterdays in the State in order to be relevant today- what a feat in such a
short time by this great and visionary Leader of our time! At the age of 39, Tonye Princewill became the youngest out
of the 28 wise men saddled with the responsibility of fashioning out the economic blueprint/policy of the new Rivers
State headed by no mean person than the fearless and avowed principal of good governance, Prof Nimi Briggs. Franklin
D Roosevelt may have had the likes of Tonye Princewill, the sensational AC Leader in Rivers State in mind when he
wrote: "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether
we provide enough for those who have little." Holding tenaciously to this eternal verity, Princewill who turned 39 on 4th
January, 2008 believes that a leader should be a public servant who strives unrelentingly to put smiles on the faces of
his followers without placing undue emphasis on their social status.
He has perfected plans to take Rivers State to the promise land as his own contribution. To achieve this, this
philanthropist par excellence gives scholarships to 150 undergraduate and post graduate students every year in Rivers
State to lay the foundation of egalitarian and greater Rivers State of the future. This Peacemaker to the people of Rivers
State single handedly stepped into several youth crisis and bankrolled the ceasefire that almost consumed the Kalabari
Kingdom . The fact remains that Sir Celestine Omehia will never forget this young man in a hurry during his ill-fated
administration in the State as he kept him on his toes throughout the period of his tenure ship as the Governor of Rivers
State for him to be on the path of democratic tendencies and righteousness. All the above enumerated enviable records
of Tonye Princewill notwithstanding, he refused to be cowed by some forces that found it hard to accept the fact that
he could just drop his case at the Election Tribunal to join Amaechi a PDP Governor to form a unity government in
Rivers State . To them this is an anathema that should be discarded immediately. Instead he stated to me, ‘Rivers State
comes first’ Apart from building a virile, egalitarian, vibrant, cohesive and compact Action Congress in Rivers State that
is today dreaded and feared by all the undemocratic elements in Rivers State, making Rivers State one of the strong
bases of Action Congress in Nigeria is a task he has set for himself to accomplish. “We have taken our decisions in
Rivers state based on the lesser of two evils and the future of our party.
Many do not know the details of our reasoning but we are comforted in the knowledge that in the end all will be
revealed” This new notion may have informed this enigma of a politician in sponsoring the Rivers State AC to some
other State Chapters facing one problem or the other. On the 23rd of April, 2008, he funded the Rivers State AC to visit
the National Leader of AC, ALH. Atiku Abubakar at his country home in Yola in Adamawa not only to identify with the
Adamawa State Chapter but also to make some contributions in strengthening the chapter- this act is the first of its kind
by any other Chapter of AC. On 4th May, 2008; Rivers State AC was at Bayelsa sponsored by this new block in Nigeria
politics to donate fund to assist the Chapter to run its election. Edo State is lined up for the next point of call. Tonye
Princwill put his political wizardry into action when from far away London in his normal high profile diplomacy
brokered peace and resolved the internal conflict between Prince Ebtimi Amgbare and Chief Denzel Kentebe, two AC
Leaders in Bayelsa laying claims to be the authentic AC Flag-bearers for Bayelsa gubernatorial election coming up on
24th May, 2008 with Chief Kentebe accepting to team up with Prince Amgbare to wrestle out powers from PDP in
Bayelsa State. Through the political sagacity and prudence of Prince Tonye Princewill, AC as a political party in Rivers
State has at the moment two functional Commissioners in the State Executive Council of Rivers State, Bar. Osimah
Gina Oyibo for Ministry of Urban Development and a renowned politician in Rivers State, Chief Davies Ibiamu of RPN
(Special Duties) who will soon be joining us in AC.
These two great personalities will soon be joined by Rivers State AC Deputy Leader, Chief Williams Igweh as a Special
Assistant to Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi. In the offing for the party, series of other appointments are being
planned for the party. “This situation and other fortunes on our side do not in any way becloud our sense of judgment
that we are the main opposition party and the major voice of our voiceless people as we have continued to criticize the
government where necessary and offer solutions and suggestions on how to move our dear State forward when
imperative”. Enough of the political antecedents of this new visionary Leader in River State let us consider his economic
blue-print and how he wants to exhibit it! The historical ground breaking of the “ Mega Hospital ” by the State
Government of Rivers State on Sunday 11th May, 2008 at Port Harcourt , Rivers State epitomizes what Tonye
Princewill actually stands for in politics and Rivers State . A project that will truly change the face of health-care in
Nigeria was brought to fruition. A project whose MOU was signed on 24th January 2008 between the Rivers State
Government and the Management of Clinotech Diagnostic and Pharmaceutical Inc based in Canada. A great idea
conceptualized by Engr. Tonye Princewill, the AC Leader in Rivers State . This Mega Hospital the first of its kind in
the entire Niger Delta region is expected not only to revolutionize health-care in Nigeria but also discourage Nigerians
from further traveling to America or Europe for medical services.
This unique and first class equipped specialist hospital with one thousand-bed space will deal with internal medicine,
obstetrics, gynecology, surgery and pediatrics and is expected to provide clinical capacity, managerial and quality
control management and training and employing indigenes of the State. The hospital will provide international standard
health care facilities that will meet the need of every Nigerian desiring the best medical attention equivalent to any other
good hospital in Europe, America or any part of the globe. Clinotech will be investing 60 million dollars in the first phase
and 135 million in the second phase while Rivers State Government will be investing 40 million dollars and the land. Dr.
Harrison Ofiyai, a renowned son of Niger Delta whose products are well appreciated all over the world, manages
Clinotech. With time he is expected to build a branch of the company’s factory so that most of their products produced
in foreign countries will be produced in Rivers State . Bringing this great son of ours back to the region after spending
30 years outside the shores of our country is a monumental feat on the side of Tonye Princewill and the Rivers state
government. A brand new mother and children’s hospital is also in the pipeline. Here the government’s investment is
even minimal proving that the first investor advantage is alive and well. Commissioning is scheduled for June 2010.
Before you jump into conclusions listen to how this great physician, Dr Abio Sokari the Chairman/Internat;1 of Cities
Foundations, KC, MO Inc., USA reacted on the above project; “We write to congratulate for the second time the Rivers
State Government including the Action Congress Party of the State this time, on the occasion of laying the foundation
for the building of the ‘mega hospital’. Yes, this will indeed improve the quality of life of the masses and prevent
hopefully the siphoning of huge sums of Naira to foreign hospitals through seeking medical attention abroad on minor
and major ailments.
While appreciating such gigantic projects & contracts, we wish to direct attention to the State Rural, Community and
State Hospitals which had been in decay for the last ten years during Dr. Peter Odili's governance and are still
degenerating. These State Community and Teaching Hospitals will be the feeder Medical Institutions to the "mega" one
when in operation. They should therefore be extensively refurbished, adequately equipped with modern facilities. Proper
attention should also be paid to the training of medical & allied health sciences specialists as well as medical laboratory
technology staff pari passu the building of the "mega" hospital for best practices” This is the best step any matured
mind ought to take advise and encourage the key actors to enable them do more for our State. Little did Dr Sokari
know that the partnership of Action Congress and Amaechi have already answered that question even before he asked
it. A massive training and investment exercise is already underway.
Two quick points deserve mentioning here. First is the investors are freeing money for government to invest in their
own facilities and second the training programme supported by the government is going to focus on bringing the
trainers here as opposed to sending a few doctors, nurses and technicians there. This has the tripartite advantage of
increased numbers trained, patients benefiting from high quality medical care and doctors getting on the job training.
Apart from the above feat, Prince Tonye Princewill facilitated the coming of Silver Bird Group, a private entertainment
outfit in Nigeria to partner with the Rivers State Government that resulted in the signing of a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) for the construction of a Multi-Purpose Entertainment Park in Port Harcourt worth about N20
billion on 4th December, 2007. This project is expected to transform the area around the Isaac Boro Park and the
Cultural Centre to a world class Multi-Purpose Entertainment Park and the State to a true modern Garden city. The
project will have a shopping mall, Conference Centre, a 5-star hotel, an amusement park and a large parking space for
1,000 cars and also promote tourism in the State. This project apart from creating the first modern tourism centre in
the State is estimated to create over one thousand jobs for our youths when completed.
The over 20 Billion Naira private initiative is to be executed with 85% labour and material contents provided by the
people of the State which will go a long way to provide bread on the tables of many Rivers State families. This gigantic
project has already been commenced in the State Capital of Rivers State, Port Harcourt . It is hopeful to note that with
the mega hospital groundbreaking ceremony that will change the face of Rivers State , Tonye Princewill is not yet done
with what he wants Rivers State to look like. He is currently on tour of European Countries imploring and luring more
established Investors to Rivers State . By the time he is through, the Rivers State of the dream of the founders will be
realized! According to Prince Tonye Princewill “the aim is to highlight the good goings on in Rivers State and the drive
to rid the state of the negative image it is slowly acquiring with quiet discomfort. Even in Baghdad , people are investing
but we don't wish for that here. Our problem is not going to be a shortage of investment but the smooth management
of the investor so that they not only invest on this occasion but over and over again. Rome was not built in a day, but it
was built and that is what we intend to do here." More investors are expected in the State in the next couple of months
and the word around the campfire is that three major investors not requiring any financial investment from Rivers state
are already lined up for entry! “I will be centrally concerned with promoting and engaging on peace, stability and unity
initiatives and putting much energy in addressing key issues of human capital development in the State.
To achieve this I intend to assist the administration in executing and providing people orientated projects and basic
amenities to alleviate the suffering of the down trodden masses of the people of Rivers State; employing and
empowering the youths and erasing all forms of youths restiveness and militancy in the State and removing the attention
of the Government from projects that can be better handled by the private sector”. While some of our so called Leaders
are busy sponsoring militancy in the State, Tonye Princewill concerns himself with promoting and engaging peace,
stability and unity initiatives while putting much energy in addressing key issues of human capital development in the
State. He recently organized a demonstration of over 500 unemployed graduates to Government House and secured
publicity for them. This compelled Governor Rotimi Amaechi to direct the immediate registration of all unemployed
youths in each LGA and several banks and other organisations are now reaching out to the Graduate Bureau body he
sponsored to begin employing qualified Rivers people.
To Tonye Princewill “ I have never subscribed to leadership stratum as an end, rather I see leadership as a means to an
end; the end being the socio-economic and political emancipation of the entire people of Rivers State ”. Rivers State is

billion on 4th December, 2007. This project is expected to transform the area around the Isaac Boro Park and the
Cultural Centre to a world class Multi-Purpose Entertainment Park and the State to a true modern Garden city. The
project will have a shopping mall, Conference Centre, a 5-star hotel, an amusement park and a large parking space for
1,000 cars and also promote tourism in the State. This project apart from creating the first modern tourism centre in
the State is estimated to create over one thousand jobs for our youths when completed.
The over 20 Billion Naira private initiative is to be executed with 85% labour and material contents provided by the
people of the State which will go a long way to provide bread on the tables of many Rivers State families. This gigantic
project has already been commenced in the State Capital of Rivers State, Port Harcourt . It is hopeful to note that with
the mega hospital groundbreaking ceremony that will change the face of Rivers State , Tonye Princewill is not yet done
with what he wants Rivers State to look like. He is currently on tour of European Countries imploring and luring more
established Investors to Rivers State . By the time he is through, the Rivers State of the dream of the founders will be
realized! According to Prince Tonye Princewill “the aim is to highlight the good goings on in Rivers State and the drive
to rid the state of the negative image it is slowly acquiring with quiet discomfort. Even in Baghdad , people are investing
but we don't wish for that here. Our problem is not going to be a shortage of investment but the smooth management
of the investor so that they not only invest on this occasion but over and over again. Rome was not built in a day, but it
was built and that is what we intend to do here." More investors are expected in the State in the next couple of months
and the word around the campfire is that three major investors not requiring any financial investment from Rivers state
are already lined up for entry! “I will be centrally concerned with promoting and engaging on peace, stability and unity
initiatives and putting much energy in addressing key issues of human capital development in the State.
To achieve this I intend to assist the administration in executing and providing people orientated projects and basic
amenities to alleviate the suffering of the down trodden masses of the people of Rivers State; employing and
empowering the youths and erasing all forms of youths restiveness and militancy in the State and removing the attention
of the Government from projects that can be better handled by the private sector”. While some of our so called Leaders
are busy sponsoring militancy in the State, Tonye Princewill concerns himself with promoting and engaging peace,
stability and unity initiatives while putting much energy in addressing key issues of human capital development in the
State. He recently organized a demonstration of over 500 unemployed graduates to Government House and secured
publicity for them. This compelled Governor Rotimi Amaechi to direct the immediate registration of all unemployed
youths in each LGA and several banks and other organisations are now reaching out to the Graduate Bureau body he
sponsored to begin employing qualified Rivers people.
To Tonye Princewill “ I have never subscribed to leadership stratum as an end, rather I see leadership as a means to an
end; the end being the socio-economic and political emancipation of the entire people of Rivers State ”. Rivers State is
better off with such egalitarian leaders assisting Governor Amaechi to take the State to a new level. This is the Tonye
Princewill of Rivers State whose mission in Nigeria is yet to be understood by his peers!
