SUBMISSION OF THE RIVERS STATE TRUTH AND RECONCILLIATION
COMMISSION REPORT – AC URGES GOVERNMENT TO IMPLEMENT
The Action Congress received with elation the news, that the Justice Kayode Eso
led Rivers State Truth and Reconciliation Commission, mandated with the task of
establishing the immediate and remote causes behind the mayhem and insecurity
in the state, has formally presented its
Report to the state government. Noteworthy in the 571-page report, is the
commission’s indictment of the previous Odili administration and the Obasanjo led
federal government for their role in the breakdown of law and order in Rivers state
through their support of acts of criminality in the guise of militancy, ultimately
culminating in the deplorable state of security in the state.
Other laudable outcomes of the commission’s activities include its mediation and
reconciliation of 15 warring communities who hitherto had been in conflict. Resolving
22 personal matters amicably after due appraisal of the over 215 memoranda filed
before the commission.
Whilst commending Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi for demonstrating his
commitment to the people of Rivers State through this concluded exercise since he
was inclined to go for a Judicial Commission of enquiry instead.
We the Action Congress who unknown to Odili insisted on the truth and
reconciliation in the first place urge the State Government to listen to the voices of
Rivers people once more and set up a panel to study the findings of the Commission
and precede to issue a white paper on it. We opine that far-reaching
recommendations of the Commission must be reflected in the Government White
paper and subsequently implemented so that public funds and time spent by the
Commission to come to these conclusions will be justified.
On the subject of funds let the Governor note that being tough on crime also needs
to be matched with being tough on the causes of crime. If his support for
rehabilitation and the social re-orientation of our youths can be matched by the
support he gives the security forces, we will all be the happier for it. That quite
clearly is not presently the case.
