Amaechi threatens to arrest contractors
GENTLE .C. WOKE
Rivers State Governor Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has threatened to arrest
contractors handling state government projects that abandoned work after payments were
made to them.
Governor Amaechi, who gave the indication Friday during an unscheduled inspection tour
of school projects in Port Harcourt , said any contractor engaged by the state government
that abandons work would be arrested and prosecuted.
The governor, who was not happy at the pace of work on some model primary school
projects in Port Harcourt particularly the Churchill Primary School warned the contractor to
return to site immediately.
Governor Amaechi’s anger was heightened when he discovered that the contractor in
question had been paid 100 per cent of the contractual sum, which was done to enable him
increase the pace of work so as to ameliorate the plight of the pupils that had been
displaced as a result of the construction work.
The governor, who was unhappy with the contractor’s attitude to complete the project,
promised to deal with him should he fail to heed the warning to return to site and ensure an
early completion of work.
The inspection tour also took the governor to the UPE Model Primary School , Borokiri,
Orogbum Primary School all in Port Harcourt Local Government Area, to ascertain the
extent of work on the projects.
Meanwhile the governor also inspected on-going works at the Model Secondary School at
Eleme and Tai Local Government Areas with the visiting Educomp Group from South Africa
as well as the Elekahia Health Centre.
