CNPP describes Yar’Adua’s amnesty “a panic measure” as
militant factions accept amnesty in principle
Oludare Sunday Fase | African Examiner | Mon, June 29, 2009
The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has described the
proposed amnesty to the Niger Delta militants by President Umar YarAdua as
“a panic measure, an act of desperation to score a point on an item in his
nebulous 7 point agenda.”
The National Chairman of the Conference Maxi Okwu stated this in an e-mail
sent to African Examiner over the proposed amnesty to the Niger Delta
militants.
He said “We do not believe that granting amnesty alone to militants will solve
the problem of the insurgency in the Niger Delta. It is equally important that a
clear distinction is drawn between genuine agitators who took to arms to press
home their point and criminals who cashed in on the situation to line their
pockets with blood oil dollars.”
According to Okwu “The ultimate solution in our view lies in addressing the
issue of our jaundiced federation brought about by prolonged military rule.”
“ We must go back to a true federation as agreed by our founding fathers in
the late 50's. As a concomitant of this restore fiscal federalism. Legislation like
the Petroleum Act , Land Use Decree etc must be abrogated and expunged
from our statute books.” he added.
Meanwhile, Four militants have accepted in principle the amnesty offer until
the outcome of their meeting with President Umar Yar’Adua.
Representatives of Ateke Tom, Farah Dagogo, Soboma George and Boyloaf,
who are key leaders of armed gangs behind some of the most spectacular
attacks, said they would like to meet President Yar’Adua to work out details of
the amnesty.
You will recall that last Thursday, Yar'Adua announced amnesty for Militants of
the Niger Delta with a view to resolving the protracted violence in the region.
