Armed Robbers Kill MTN, Keke Drivers, Injure Many in Enugu

Residents of Mbanugo, in coal camp area of Enugu city, were Monday afternoon thrown into fear and panick as a robbery gang trailed a vehicle belonging to tele communication giant, MTN to the street, killing the driver, and a tricycle operator, as well as injuring scores of innocent passersby.

According to the state police public Relations officer PPRO, Ebere Amarizu, (DSP) the hoodlums had allegedly trailed driver of the branded bus and some occupants suspected to be conveying some MTN products and undisclosed amount of money from the company’s office to the scene of the ugly incident.

The state police spokesman said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects, opened fire on the driver on getting to Mbanugo, after shooting sporadically adding that the driver died instantly, while, a tricycle operator, who was running for his dear life on hearing the gun sound was hit by a stray bullet.

Meanwhile, he disclosed that the corpses of the drivers had been deposited into a nearby mortuary, while the injured ones are now taken treatment in an undisclosed nearby hospital.

As a result of the ugly incident, the state police command has, advised members of the public to always apply for security whenever they want to convey valuables or huge sums of money from one location to the other.

Our correspondent also gathered that throughout the period of the over thirty minutes robbery, the police did not come to the scene of the incident but came much later after the hoodlums had fled the area, only to remove the dead bodies and the injured.

African Examiner, gathered that the robbers carted away monies totalling about N20 million.

The police, Amarizu said “Police have commenced full scale investigations into the alleged robbery incident that took place at Mbanugo Street, Coal Camp, Enugu on Monday where a driver of a bus of one of the telecom companies based in Enugu, MTN was allegedly shot dead by yet to be identified hoodlums and leaving two persons with severe injuries”.

In a similar development, operatives of the Awkunanaw Division of the Nigeria police Enugu state command Monday nabbed three notorious armed robbery suspects including a woman who have been terrorizing members of the public within Liberation Road Awkunanaw and its environs with tricycle popularly known as (keke napep.)

The state police command via office of the PPRO, said the hoodlums were allegedly nabbed by the operatives as they fired sporadically into the air in a bid to scare people and be able to operate smoothly, “but unfortunately for them, luck ran out of them”.

“A lady amongst them was arrested first, which later led to the arrest of two others who were in their hiding place to avoid being fished out.
