Lagos is reputed by some to be a “no man’s
land” in the committee of Nigerian states, but
this assertion does not foreclose the fact that
there are people who are historically origins of
the nation’s hub of commercial activities.

The uniqueness of Lagos as an abode for all
comers has however translated into immense
blessings for the state in the realms of politics.
The task of governing Lagos is technically as
herculean as managing Nigeria as a whole, but
in spite of the complexity inherent in the
diversity of its inhabitants and its geography,
the state is once again at the center stage of a
tortuous journey towards transformation.

When former Governor Bola Tinubu passed the
baton of governing Lagos to Fashola, there was
a lot of skepticism as to what to expect
from the horizon. Fashola was until his election
a political featherweight in Lagos and of course,
he was never on the people’s shortlist
as the next governor, simply because he was
relatively unknown.

Today, the man Fashola’s feet appears to be
fitting in to the shoes left behind by Bola Tinubu
and this is becoming a reality day by day
as the young governor unfolds one program
after the other towards changing the face of
Lagos for good.

The Lagos governor's magic wand is definitely
his resolve to step on toes, but at the public
interest and this seems to be yielding the
desired results. How on earth can anyone clean
up street trading at Oshodi rail line or Tinubu?
The military, even with their guns and
horsewhips never succeeded in ridding Lagos
of street trading, so business went on as usual.

If you have been to Lagos, you won’t
understand what a truly mismanaged
environment looks like. In fact, the
environmental problem is a monstrous
phenomenon, which successive governments
couldn’t handle and this includes the ever-
threatening bar beach upsurge.
Fashola appears to have taken the right step
forward in tackling the Lagos environment
problem and the question is if his government
would be able to achieve the seemingly
impossible task of transforming Lagos.

Fashola’s plan for rescuing the Lagos
environment sounds good and practicable,
especially in the areas of waste management
and air quality control.

The introduction of 100 new trucks for waste
pick-up is indicative of Fashola’s determination
to take Lagos out of its
environmental mess. Additionally, his street and
traffic light project is step in the right direction
and Lagos has been long overdue for
this, but it’s never too late.
Wait a minute, metro rail for Lagos? This is
another of the Action Congress (AC) governor’s
ambitious projects and if this is executed as
planned, then the most grueling problem in the city
would be permanently solved-traffic. There is no
gainsaying that you can spend the
two hours Lagos-Ibadan travel time by just driving
or catching public transportation from your Agege
home to resume work in Lagos
Island office. It is a common knowledge that
while you are still sweating in the traffic hold-up,
the nefarious activity of bandits thrives
unabated. Therefore, any meaningful action
towards at least reducing traffic is always a
welcome idea in Lagos.

Why has it taken so long to have security cameras
in Nigerian cities? The nation is now at a
precarious situation where a governor or
police commissioner’s convoy is too little a target
for armed robbers. Fashola should be applauded
for taking the initiative to consider the
installation of those cameras in strategic areas of
Lagos. The cameras cannot shoot at armed
robbers, but they can remind the bandits
that someone is watching. All other states should
not hesitate to embrace the street camera project,
especially at this time when the crime
level is soaring faster than the prices of
commodities in the market.

At a news interview, the Eze Ndigbo of Lagos,
Hyacinth Ohazulike commended Fashola for doing
wonders in Lagos. The Eze’s
appraisal of the governor is a true recognition of
performance backed with action. However,
Fashola should do his best to resettle
traders who have been displaced from the
roadsides, as so many of them may not be able to
afford the high cost of renting stores. The
state can assist this group of people through soft
loans or by massive construction of affordable
shopping centers. The governor should
also gallantly tackle the prevalent problem of
employment, power supply and decadence of
public schools among other teething problems
confronting Lagosians.

As Fashola continues to bask in the euphoria of
commendations for his good works, he should
take cognizance of the fact that a lot of
Nigerians have been battered over the years by
very greedy, corrupt and insensitive governments.

The resultant effects of the long years
of untold sufferings is the reign of poverty and
penury that governs the lives of our people. In the
light of this, as Fashola strives
towards doing the seemingly impossible, he should
execute his projects with an aura of human face.
Above all, the young and amiable
governor should be encouraged by all and sundry
to follow up this lofty project to a logical
conclusion and Lagos would be the best city
of abode.
