The Boko Haram Islamist sect yesterday gave reasons why it executed the
Christmas Day bombings that killed over 35 people at a catholic church in
Madalla, Niger State, explaining that the act was a reprisal to avenge the
killing of some Muslims in Jos, Plateau State, during their Eid-el-Fitr festival.
Boko Haram spokesman, Abul-Qaqa admitted that the sect was behind the
spate of bombings in the country on Christmas Day.
Abul-Qaqa, who spoke to journalists in a telephone conversation in
Maiduguri, said the attacks were meant to prove that no amount of
surveillance by security agents would deter his members from doing
whatever they planned to do.
“By the grace of God, we are responsible for all the attacks on Sunday,” he
said.
“What we did was a reminder to all those that forgot the atrocities
committed against our Muslim brothers during the Eid-el Fitr celebrations in
Jos. Many Muslims were killed but the Federal Government and the
international community maintained sealed lips,” Qaqa stated
Meanwhile criticisms have continued to trail the Christmas Day bombing of
some churches in Nigeria with the Trade Union Congress, TUC, describing it
as a direct affront against God.
The group wondered why the sect would choose a sacred day such as
Christmas Day to bomb defenceless and harmless people.
In a statement jointly signed by its President Comrade Peter Esele and
Secretary General, John Kolawole, the TUC wondered why a faceless sect
could be killing and maiming Nigerians with impunity urging the federal
government not to look helpless in the face of the menace.
