Buhari Receives Certificate Of Return, Vows To Fight Corruption, Terrorism


President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari has received Certificate of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and vowed to fight corruption and terrorism to a standstill.

 

Buhari was presented with the Certificate of return for winning the presidential election by INEC’s Chairman, Athahiru Jega at the International Conference Centre, Abuja around 2:20pm.

 

He assured all foreign governments that his administration would be forceful in fight against terrorism, drugs and climate change, assuring African nation that Nigeria would partner with them for economic development to eradicate poverty.

 

Buhari thanked Nigerians for reposing their trust in him, lamenting that the nation faces challenges in terms of insecurity, corruption and economic downturn, while vowing to tackle all these.

 

“This nation has suffered in recent past, for instance, insurgency. I assure you that Boko Haram will soon know the strength of our collectively, we shall tackle corrupt which is worst than terrorism.

 

“Corruption has destroyed economy, it kills unjustly, such illegality undermines democracy; its conspirator amasses money thinking that they can buy government. Corruption shall not be tolerated. Join me to fight this and other challenges.

 

“We shall not take the people for granted. We shall do the job you expect us to do. This is not the first time Nigerians have voted for us but this is the first time the votes are allowed to count,” he stated.

 

Buhari said he is grateful to God for this day, honoured and humbled, saying that many Nigerians had been waiting for this and that change had finally come, saying that “your vote has changed the nation’s destiny. The daylight of new democracy government has come. It is victory for all Nigerians.

 

“Millions of you have worked for this thing. Many risk their lives and others have died. We sent our condolence to those who lost their lives. Our supporters should celebrate the victory with prayers and reflection. It is historic hour.

 

“As the result of the election has shown, your labour will never be in vain. Democracy will be entrenched in the land. Let us put the past behind. Our government is one that will listen and embrace all. I pledge myself and the administration to just and peaceful government.

 

“There will be no favouritism based on ethnicity, religion, gender etc. Nobody is above the law. You shall be able to go to bed that you are safe and your constitutional right remains in safe hands. My love and concern for this nation is for all. You are all my people and I shall treat all as my own. I shall work for all both those who voted for me, those who did not vote for me and those who did not vote at all, we are all Nigerians,” he stated.

 

According to Buhari, “I will make the best contribution to the nation. If I am not capable, I won’t have come forward. I extend hands of friendship to Jonathan and his team. Jonathan is a great Nigerian and he is still our president and we should support him. I looked forward to meeting him in the days to come and discuss how our team will work together.”
