By Niyi Adeyi – Coach Mauricio Pochettino Tottenham of the English Football club has attributed his decision to hand over the headship of the team to Emmanuel Adebayor on trust and confidence in him over superb performance.
Irrespective of the mounting resentment, Pochettino affirmed Adebayor was one of the team’s “potential” three captains, saying he had no doubt in Adebayor’s capacity. The Coach also explained that he had in the last seven months – at the takeoff of the season, decided that any of Hugo Lloris, Younes Kaboul and Adebayor could be appointed as the team’s captain.
Coach Pochettino, against all expectations – of the team’s mates and club supporters Wednesday handed the Togolese lad the Club skipper’s armband for the 1-0 first leg victory at White Hart Lane, days after Tottenham supporters’ hostile reception on his return to action after two months on the bench.
When featured as a substitute for the first time, against Sunderland last weekend, after eight weeks of break, ex – Arsenal and Manchester City striker Adebayor was booed by the supporters, yet Pochettino maintained his decision.
In spite of criticism, Pochettino had refused to admit he made a mistake on his choice over Adebayor, as he also insisted the striker had been named alongside two other potential captains in pre-season.
Responding directly, Pochettino restated he was confident in Adebayor said: “I didn’t hear the crowd’s reaction. For me I am focused on the game. I am happy with his performance. He was good”.
