Reps committee preaches unity among Nigerians in diaspora
*Says  proposed Nigerian In Diaspora Commission is due for 2nd  reading
By Oludare Sunday Fase/USA

The chairman of the House of Representatives committee on diaspora Hon. Abike
Dabiri-Erewa has advised the Nigerian In Diaspora Organization (NIDO) and other
socio-political groups to close ranks in their efforts to achieve legal recognition back
at home.

Abike Dabiri, (AC, Ikorodu federal constituency of Lagos state) gave the advise
during a conference organized by the Nigerian Women Leadership Council
International Inc. (NWLC) in Maryland, United State of America.

“We will do our best as parliament, but again let us search our souls. NIDO is a
fantastic organization, but there are people who are telling us that if you are talking
to NIDO don’t even talk to us.  I told them we are going to talk to everybody.  And
again NIDO and other groups, we need to get our house together’’ She said.

    The lawmaker also told the
    organizer to maximize the
    goals and objectives of
    the  conference saying “we
want to see what you come
up with at the end of this
    conference, don’t let it be
    another talk show”

    On the issues of
    bureaucracy  and other
    problems confronting
    Nigerians whenever they
    bring business to Nigeria,
    the committee chair
    promised to intervene if
    the matter is brought to
    the attention of the
    members.

“If I hear about specific cases we can intervene, we have intervened in about four
cases, it might not be as bad as you think, but if you have a contact. In the area of
health, there are lot of issues, and the minister has been very helpful, if you say this
is the problem and you hand it to me as abike or other members of the diaspora
committee, come to Nigeria, and we will take you there and say this is what we have.
We will intervene as a parliament. If you have something serious, you want to bring
a company home, there will be bureaucracy, but we will intervene as a parliament.”

Abike Dabiri also urged the women not to let their leadership role or political career
affect their home noting that “the home actually should be the first step of teaching
and as women if we don’t get the home front right, we will not get other things right.”

“when I say home front we don’t have to be married, at least we have children, and
make sure we raised them well and with the support of your family you will succeed
in whatever we do. That is a challenge, as we rise, as we embark on our carrier, we
as mothers should not neglect our home. ” she noted.

The lawmaker also disclosed that the proposed Nigerian In Diaspora Commission is
due for the second reading on the floor of the House of Representatives explaining
that  ''we are planning to set a diaspora commission because that is what we came
up with as a parliament, because we see a missing link, you have written a lot of
documents and they are getting no where because there is nobody to coordinate
them''

She however frowned at a situation where "somebody from the diaspora is already
lobbying to head the commission that is not yet in place"

Various Nigerian women entrepreneurs who attended the conference from various
states in USA and Nigeria lamented the bureaucracy they faced whenever they want
to talk to government officials both in Nigeria and in some Nigeria mission abroad.

One woman said ‘‘We want to take people home, we don’t want to be responsible
for their security, and we want to be having the backing of the people at home.’’

The conference titiled ‘‘Nigerian women, the Assets of our nation’’ was held at
Sheraton hotel, Betsville, Maryland, USA between May 8-10 2009. It was organized
by the Nigeria Women Leadership Council International Inc. (NWLC) in conjunction
with various networks of women in the USA.
