BALTIMORE, MD (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Less than a week the ex- Governor of old Anambra State and Chieftain of the opposition Peoples Democratic party (PDP) in Enugu state, Senator Jim Nwobodo and other stalwarts of the party defected to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), there are strong indications that more notable politicians in the State may have also concluded plans to embrace Chief John Oyegun-led ruling party.
Recall, AFRICAN EXAMINER reported last week Friday that Nwobodo, Senator Fidelis Okoro, who represented Enugu North senatorial district between 1999 and 2007, as well as one-time National Secretary- General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Richard Ozobu, dumped the PDP for APC.
However, the Nwobodo’s defection has continued to attract mixed reactions in political quarters, within and outside the State, just as many saw the development as a strategy by the elder statesman, to escape investigations of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The former Governor was recently named by embattled former National Security Adviser (NSA) Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd) among those who benefited from the multi-billion naira arms purchase scam, currently being investigated by the Nigeria’s anti-graft body.
Although, Nwobodo has denied any wrongdoing, saying that the N500 million released to him by the NSA was meant for the PDP leaders in the South-East to mobilize support for the re-election of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Our Correspondent reliably gathered from a source close to a PDP chieftain in the State, who craved anonymity that a good number of top members of the party have resolved to embrace the new political marriage “like our political father, and mentor Jim Nowbodo, did recently”
Further investigations by AFRICAN EXAMINER revealed that among those warming up for the defection exercise expected to happen any moment from now include, some ex- national officers of the PDP from the State, former members of the State and National Assembly from the area, as well as immediate past council chairmen of the state.
Enugu State, had in the past produced former National Chairman of PDP, National Auditor, among others.
