ban all “useless” foreign trips, seminars, medical visits, retreats
-CNPP tells Yar’Adua
Oludare S. Fase | posted: Mon. July 6, 2009
The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has urged President Umar
Yar’Adua to stop government officials from wasting public funds through
“unnecessary foreign tours, medical visits and workshops. Tea breaks, useless
local seminars, gala nights and retreats .”
The National Chairman of the conference Maxi Okwu stated in a press
statement issued in Abuja and sent to African Examiner via e-mail.
The chairman said the president must reprioritize government spending and
eliminate waste adding that “the huge resources wasted on an army of political
tin gods, which include top civil servants and Central Bank bosses, on ear-
splitting sirens, squadrons of anti-riot policemen and multi-car convoys must
stop.’’
According to him ‘‘it is only in this country that over pampered public office
holders at tax payers expense would talk about hardship allowance. A local
councilor who ought to be on part time is talking about accommodation
allowance in his rural community and personal assistants.’’
Maxi Okwu also thrown his weight behind the proposed cut in allowances of
certain political and judicial office holders by Revenue Mobilization, Allocation,
and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
‘‘We are not getting commensurate value for the gargantuan national resources
expended on these political parasites. A clear example is the national assembly
where for all the money spent running into trillions in the past two years only a
handful of bills have been passed into law. This makes it the most expensive
legislature in the world.’ He noted.
