I knew I would One Day Play for Arsenal – Danny Welbeck

Danny Welbeck says he made the right decision by leaving Manchester United for Arsenal on transfer deadline day.

The Gunners sealed a dramatic last-ditch £16m swoop for the England forward just minutes before Monday night’s 11pm deadline.

Welbeck signed a five-year contract at The Emirates and brought manager Arsene Wenger’s frantic search for a new striker to an end.

“Things move on in life and I think you’ve really got to make the right decision in the situation that you’re in at that moment in time,” Welbeck said.

“I really do believe that coming to Arsenal is the right decision.”

He added: “It’s exciting times for me. It’s great to be a part of this club and it’s a team that I’ve always watched in the Premier League.

“I’ve envisaged myself playing in this team before. For it to finally happen is very exciting.”

Welbeck’s exit from Old Trafford became increasingly likely with just hours left in the transfer window, following the arrival of Monaco forward Radamel Falcao at United on a mega money season-long loan.

And Arsenal’s new forward admitted his relief of getting that late deal over the line.

“It went right down to the wire in the end,” Welbeck said.

“It’s difficult to say how I felt at the times of each day because the deal was on and then it was off but at the end of the day I’m an Arsenal player and I couldn’t be any happier at the moment.”

Wenger had been desperate to bolster his forward line after losing leading marksman Olivier Giroud to a broken leg suffered late on in the 2-2 draw at Everton last month.

With Giroud not expected back until Christmas, Welbeck says he is ready to use his switch to Arsenal as a springboard for goalscoring success.

“I just think this is the next stage of my development – to come to Arsenal, to really show people what I can do as a footballer and hopefully get to the place where I want to be.

“I believe the style of play the manager’s got and the boys play and with the magnificent players in midfield slotting balls through, I can run on to the end of those balls and slot them away.”
