Ife Kingmakers Ask Giesi Family To Present Candidate For New Ooni

By Akin Soneyin – The mild tussle surrounding the installment of the new Oni of Ife, might have been finally laid to rest as the ancient town kingmakers, Monday demand one of contending ruling houses –  Giesi family, to produce qualified candidate (s) to succeed the recently departed Monarch, Late Oba Okunade Sijuwade.

Addressing press conference in Ife, the Obalufe of Ife, Oba Solomon Omisakin, who represented 16 other traditional rulers of Ife, Osun State, South West Nigeria, indicated that the kingmakers used the 1980 Ife Chieftaincy Declaration to arrive at the resolution that Giesi family should produce the new paramount Monarch – Ooni.

With the latest development, Oba Omisakin affirmed that the new Ooni would be named in the next 40 days.

According to him, Section 19 subsection a (3) of 1980 Declaration adopted by the Ife Kingmakers  favoured that it was “the turn of the Giesi Ruling House, to present a (candidate/ candidates) for the vacant stool of the Ooni of Ife Chieftaincy”.

The Kingmakers however urged other ruling houses to support them and await their turn to occupy the throne.

It would be recalled the Ife Kingmakers officially announced the passage of the immediate past Oni, Oba Sijuwade after weeks of delay. The burial held about a week later.
