Solution to Niger-Delta problems requires strong political will
-Hon. Ike Chinwo

By Oludare Fase and Ayo Fawibe in Toronto Published Mar. 30, 2009
A member of the House of representatives  Hon. Ike Chinwo representing Obio/Akpor
Federal Constituency, River State has said the solution to the incessant problem and
youth restiveness in the Niger-Delta requires a genuine political will from the government
in order to deal with the situation.

‘It will require a political will  to turn around of the situation in Niger-Delta. Abuja was
virgin land that was consciously develop, there is nothing wrong in doing the same in the
Niger-Delta area. You must not kill the goose that lay the golden eggs.’ he explained

The lawmaker said this in an exclusive interviews with African Examiner in Toronto
Canada, March 30, 2009. Hon Chinwo also frowned at the criminal activities  of some
miscreants in the area who are taking advantage of the situation to commit crimes  in
the name of the struggle .

The Full excerpt of the interview is as follows:-

Question: You are from the Niger delta area and you hear about restive youthfulness in
that region. What is the situation right now and how can we resolve this issue of Niger
delta once and for all.

Answer: The situation in Niger Delta is not as we expect it to be but it will be better. We
have already said that long years of neglect,  deprivation, and marginalization,  have
caused pains on the people,  the reaction is expected. There is no part of the world that
such thing will happen and there will not be a reaction. So the reaction has taken
dimension  that as of now is not unpalatable, such that you hear cases of kidnap
everyday, you hear people  who is coming to develop the area take hostage. We have
always thought that the Federal Government should have the  political will to deal with
the situation,

As of now the governors of Niger-Delta are trying their best in ensuring  massive
investment in  infrastructures, economic empowerment schemes program that would
alleviate the suffering of the people and see how the  situation can be abated.  But the
dangerous aspect of it is the criminal activities of some people that have taken
advantage of the situation to commit crimes  in the name of the struggle is totally
unacceptable. And should be condemned by all well meaning Nigerians be you from
Niger delta or other wise. The Federal Government on its part has come with some
policies, I am sure you are aware that the Niger Delta issue is one  of the top agenda of
the current president. And to that extent he has created a Niger delta ministry.

Question:  Is the creation of the ministry the solution to the problem of Niger
Delta?

Answer: Well, to him as the government, they want to bring development through
massive infrastructure to the area through the ministry, but to us whether the ministry or
the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) what we ask is that there should be a
political will to give necessary funds required to turn around the fortune of the people of
the Niger-Delta , to turn around the infrastructural decay of the people of the Niger-delta
areas, we are talking of the 90% of the resources of the mainstay of the economy  if that
is the situation therefore , it will require a political will  to turn around of the situation in
Niger-Delta. Abuja was virgin land that was consciously develop, there is nothing wrong
in doing the same in the Niger-Delta area. You must not kill the goose that lay the
golden eggs. That is my position./end.
