Democracy, corruption take center stage as Nigeria turns 48
By Oludare Fase

On October 1st 1960, Nigeria got her independence from the imperial British government. It was a wild
celebration in the street of Lagos and across the country. The feelings of joy, happiness and love
radiated the new nation.

To many Nigerians who witnessed that glorious moment, the independence would not have come at the right time.
A time for self rule and self determination. As the country marked her 48 birthday African Examiner
spoke to some ordinary Nigerians about the journey so far.

To John, this is a time to pray for the gains of
democracy. He also urged Nigerians to pray against
military incursions into Nigerian politics.  Bakare said the
problem of corruption ravaging the country are damaging
the reputation of the country. He called on politicians to
use the occasion of the independence to turn a new
leaf. While Dr. Chinedu is optimistic that the future of
Nigeria is bright especially in the area of sports and
    science.

Meanwhile the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Abdulwahid Omar in his
independence speech said ''Given its deep crisis, Nigeria needs positive and result-oriented action and
policies, particularly on infrastructure, industry and employment creation. The signal that must come
from the President is that there is an emergency and that governance cannot be business-as-usual nor be
perpetually on the slow lane. The President needs to be less of a politician and more of a purposeful
chief executive.''

To the opposition Action Congress Party, ''the country is today ranked among the poorest, using all
development indices, and among the most corrupt, not minding some recent token jump in the latest
rankings of the Transparency International. For now, we can continue to delude ourselves by saying that
the country’s survival as one indivisible nation alone is enough cause for celebration. But the truth is that
survival itself, as worthy of celebration as it may seem, means nothing if the quality of life remains the
way it is today in our nation''

Naija is 48!!!
