Iraqi Force Declares Recapture Of Ramadi From IS Militants

The Iraqi troops after fierce exchanges with the Islamic State (IS) declared Monday that it has liberated the city of Ramadi from the terrorists.

The Military Spokesman, Brig Gen Yahya Rasul confirmed that forces had achieved an “epic” victory and that the Iraqi flag had been raised over the government complex, which was previously captured by the IS militants.

Despite the Military’s claim, some reports said there were still pockets of resistance by IS in the embattled city.
Ramadi recapture would mark a landmark setback for the IS, which has been in control of the city since May, 2015. The Iraqi forces had been fighting for weeks to retake it from the rebels.
Troops yesterday, achieved partial victory when they managed to capture the government compound, flushed out or killed some IS fighters and suicide bombers who had been holding out in the buildings.

AFP quoted Brig Gen Majid al-Fatlawi of the army’s 8th division as saying IS fighters had “planted more than 300 explosive devices on the roads and in the buildings of the government complex”.

Operations to recapture Ramadi, about 55 miles (90km) west of Baghdad, by the Government forces started early November.
