Crisis looms in INEC as ex-commissioners threaten to expose
Iwu over 2007 elections

Ayo Afolabi, Abuja .

The last may not have been heard about the 2007 general election adjudged to be the most flawed in the
history of Nigeria , as five of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Commissioers
recently retired have vowed to spill the bean concerning the deal between Professor Maurice Iwu, the
commission’s Chairman and the PDP.

Source close to the Electoral Commissioners alleged that Iwu betrayed them by not allowing them to stay
in office till after the current constituency delimination exercise being conducted by the electoral body.

Beside, they were said to be displeased with Iwu over denial of some entitlements.

They were also said to be embittered by their ordeal in the hand of the anti-graft Agency, the Economic
and Financial Crime Commission which the Ex-commissioners alleged was masterminded by the Professor.

Due to a petition from INEC, two of the commissioners were said to have been detained by the EFCC in
April last year. For these affected commissioners it was pay back time for Iwu who they insisted had a
pact with the ruling party to rig the 2007 Presidential election in its favour.

Said the source, “most of them didn’t want to retire now, they were lobbying the power that be for
possible re-appointment when Iwu made it public knowledge that they were due for retirement thus
puncturing their move. They have never been happy with him since then”.

“Infact, two of the commissioners shunned the elaborate send off party organized in their honour by INEC
as a mark of showing their anger toward Iwu”, the source added.

The source further disclosed that some of the commissioners were already reaching out to the opposition
party especially Buhari camp with a view to providing information as to how and where the Presidential
election was rigged in favour of PDP.

However a serving commissioner in INEC who spoke to the African Examiner on condition of anonymity,
dismissed the threat of the ex-commissioners describing them as coward
s. He asked why the ex-
commissioners chose to keep quiet all these while.

The affected ex-commissioner include Barrister Mohammed Abubakar, Emmanuel Uchola, Mrs. Esther
Salla, Setlay Daze, Olorunnibe Farukanmi and Bello Balla
