The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has urged the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof Attahiru
Jega, to remain an impartial umpire and distant himself from any of the
contestants in the April 2011 general elections.

CNPP National Publicity Secretary, Osita Okechukwu, who gave the advice in
Abuja said it was wrong for Jega to be sighted with President Goodluck
Jonathan during the voters’ registration at his hometown in Otuoke, Bayelsa
State.

He pointed out that Prof Attahiru Jega ought to have been at his duty post at
INEC headquarters in Abuja receiving the report of non arrival or late arrival
of officials and materials and the worrisome report of malfunctioning of the
Direct Data Capturing (DDC) machines which according to him has become
the matter for the exercise.

He charged the INEC chairman “not to be a puppet of any candidate but be
an impartial umpire.”

Okechukwu added that no one desire an extension of the voters registration
exercise under any guise and called on INEC to quickly rectify all the
anomalies noticed.

The chairman of INEC, Prof Attahiru Jega, was at the weekend in the Bayelsa
State to see to the registration of the President.

He however told newsmen that it was too early for Nigerians to conclude that
the voters’ registration has failed following technical hiccups witnessed at the
commencement of the exercise.
