AC To Jonathan: Declare Emergency rule in Bayelsa
THE political crisis and the spate of bomb explosions rocking Bayelsa State, a predominantly
Ijaw state, took a turn for the worse with the opposition Action Congress (AC) insisting that the
only way to bring sanity is for Abuja to declare a state of emergency there.
The party claimed that the conflicting power forces in the state are deeply entrenched, and
could inflict further harm socio-economic and political development.
They, therefore, want President Goodluck Jonathan to act fast, by declaring a state of
emergency in Bayelsa in a bid to save his home state from continued blood-letting. AC claims
that their agitation is informed by the series of bombings, Attacks and killings being
perpetrated in the oil and gas-producing state.
Their clamourfor a state of emergency is coming against the backdrop of early Tuesday's
attack on the country home of Chief Amalate Turner, who is the Chairman of the Federal
Inland Waterways Authority(FIWA) and paramount ruler of Opume Town in Ogbia LGA of the
state.
AC State Chairman, Mr. Miriki Ebikibina, in a statement wired to AkanimoReports claimed that
the rampaging and Gestapo-like activities of succession attacks in the state by unknown
gunmen which has left over 12 persons killed and properties destroyed was ''terrifying,
shocking and unacceptable''.
According to him, ''Bayelsans in the past one week have had cause to live in a nightmare of
fear with the unknown armed gunmen comfortably unleashing terror in the state. This is a
pathetic situation that can no longer be condoned by any responsible government, both at the
National the State level, most importantly as it affects the safety of lives and properties''.
AC expressed serious concern over the spate of bombings which have targeted the homes of
imminent politicians in the state in the past one week.
The party blamed the security agents in the state, whom it accused of failure to arrest the
situation which the party described as a “ravaging scourge that is snowballing into a serious
security threat to the existing peace of the state”.
AC then implored the President Jonathan to take a decisive action on the situation in his
home state, stressing that the situation was becoming increasingly unbearable, adding that it
is a source of worry and monumental embarrassment to Mr. President.
For the opposition party, the prevailing security situation in the state was a clear indication of
the breakdown of law and order, which it argued necessitated a declaration of state of
emergency as ''a way of defending and protecting the lives of innocent and defenseless
citizens of the state''.
Our correspondent reports that Bayelsa has been rocked by series of gun attacks and
bombings on political figures in the state in the past one week after unknown armed men last
week bombed the country homes of former Deputy Governor, Mr. Peremobowei Ebebi and
new Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Nestor Binabo.
Also last week, over five persons were killed in Yenagoa, one died from gunshots when
gunmen in a car blocked a Toyota Jeep and opened fire on the occupants, killing one and
injuring two and another three persons were also killed when gunmen stormed the residence
of a Special Assistant to the Governor, Mr. Mike Wenibowei, who managed to escape the
attack. ENDS
