SPEAKER IKUFORIJI WENT TOO FAR
Babatunde Fawora
For calling a special Press Conference to speak down on the performing governor of
Lagos State, the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Ikuforiji went too far.
Reading all the statements attributed to him at the conference that held in his residence
in the Ikeja GRA in Lagos recently, one could not see where he accounted for what the
House did during the past year; which ordinarily one expected such to be the main
feature at the press briefing. Rather he went extra mile to castigate the Lagos State
Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) who rode on the back of Asiwaju Tinubu to become
the governor.
To the man on the street of Lagos, the governor has been performing without making
much noise in the media as some of his colleagues do; some even claim to have
achieved what were not true. I believe Fashola has been performing in order not to
disappoint someone like Ashiwaju who put his head on the guillotine to anoint him.
Asiwaju would have noticed the good qualities in the SAN who was his Chief of Staff and
got convinced that he would not disappoint; just as he is doing now.
This is to confirm that hundreds of Ikuforiji would still remain small to convince the Lagos
State indigenes and residents that Fashola, nay Tinubu is not performing. Notable
personalities in recent time, among them renowned musician, clergy man and others,
have kick-started the campaign for Fashola’s second term, unsolicited but borne out of
personal beliefs. The harder Ikuforijis try, the more daring Lagosians would like to
support the performing governor.
Again, reading through the News Star newspapers of Monday 11/01/10, Ikuforiji also
opined that Yar’Adua does not believe in Jonathan hence there was no proper instrument
for him to act on his behalf while away. If all those utterances of the Speaker are aimed at
getting self to the Senate in the next dispensation, just as Senator Mamora did, he has
started wrongly.
