Obafemi Martins gets Shearer praise
Posted: May 13, 2009
Obafemi Martins' goal scoring heroics in Newcastle's 3-1 win over northeast rivals
Middlesbrough on Monday has earned him special praise from manager Alan Shearer.
Martins dropped out of the starting line-up after his recurrent groin injury flared up again, but
was introduced as a substitute with 22 minutes to go and the Nigerian, playing through the
pain barrier, scored with almost his first touch just 55 seconds after coming on.
Both sides were locked at 1-1 at the time with Boro looking the more likely to get a
breakthrough, but Martins goal killed off any such hopes and provided the platform for fellow
substitute Peter Lovenkrands to add a potentially season-saving third.
Obafemi, who came on for Michael Owen,
celebrated with a manic sprint down the touchline
to jump into the arms of Shearer - the two men
who swapped the club's famous No9 shirt
celebrating together.
The manager responded with high praise.
"Oba did very well and it was an excellent strike
at exactly the right time. I wanted him to make
an impact and he certainly managed that. It was
brilliant. He is not 100 per cent fit, but he
produced the goods when it mattered.
"When you send someone on you are asking
them to make an impact but you don't expect it
after 55 seconds.
"I thought the whole side were brilliant. Oba came on and did very well, but Mark Viduka
had an outstanding game, as did Kevin Nolan, Nicky Butt, Steven Taylor, all of them.
"When confidence is low it can be very difficult to get it back, but we went a goal down and
just stuck to our task. I couldn’t have asked for any more from any of them."
The win took Newcastle above Hull City and out of the relegation three, albeit on goal
difference.
