Naturalization: Bush says US citizenship goes with responsibility
BY OLUDARE FASE AND TAIYE OLAYEMI | USA | POSTED OCTOBER 20, 2008 |
..........................................................................................................................................................................................................
President George W. Bush has urged the new naturalized US citizens to fully participate in the
democracy of the United States saying American citizenship go with “joy, freedom and responsibility”
He said “as you begin to participate fully in our democracy, remember that what you do is as important
as anything government does. I ask you to serve your new nation, beginning with your neighbor. When
this spirit of citizenship is missing, no government program can replace it, when this spirit is present no
wrong can go against it”
President Bush said this recently in a letter given to the newly naturalized US citizens during a
naturalized ceremony organized recently by the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) in
Baltimore , Maryland .
The president extolled the “enduring ideals” of America across the generations adding that “the
grandest of these ideals is an unfolding promise that everyone deserves a chance and that no
insignificant person ever born. Our country has never been united by blood or by birth or soil. We are
bound by principles that move us beyond our backgrounds, lift us above our interests and teach us
what it means to be citizens”.
The high point of the occasion was the award of citizenship certificates to the new US citizens by the
officials of the USCIS. The new naturalized US citizens cut across various continents of the world
including a number of Nigerians.
