Former NUJ chairman, Uzendu, faces EFCC, ICPC over N80m Fraud

These are certainly not the best of times for the immediate past Chairman of the Nigeria Union of
Journalists, NUJ, Abuja Council, Mr. Malachy Uzendu who has been dragged to the Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences
Commission, ICPC for allegedly stealing over N80 million of the council’s fund.

The group, which dragged the former council chair before  the anti-corruption bodies, operates under the
aegis of Concerned Members of NUJ Abuja Council.

In a petition to both bodies and signed by former council  secretary, Mr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren and Mr.
Emmanuel Ideaha, City editor of the Delta State Newspaper, they accused  Uzendu of unilaterally entering
into a 20 year lease with a bank with the sole intent of shortchanging the union of the  proceeds of the
agreement.

Before the petition, Uzendu in text messages to members of  the NUJ Abuja Council had alleged that the
transaction was worth over N500 million but later gave a different version  that it was N60 million of
which he had received N40 million  and have been unable to explain how he spent N23 million of  the
business transaction.

Other allegations leveled against him include the where about of donations received from state
governments and agencies. It is alleged that he received N3 million from Zamfara State Government; N8
million from Enugu State Government paid in two installments; N1 million from FERMA;  N2 from former
Minister of Information and Communication, Frank Nweke Jnr; N950,000 from NAFDAC; and grant from
INEC  for a media workshop which he allegedly pocketed over N1  million.

The group also petitioned the anti-graft bodies to investigate the where about of the council’s 10
computer  sets as it alleged that Uzendu had taken them to open a  café in Enugu, his home state.

Recently, the NUJ Abuja Council has been thrown into confusion following the refusal of Uzendu and the
executive  to render account of their three years old tenure.

Rather than respond to allegations of corruption leveled  against him, Mr. Uzendu and the former council
secretary,  Mr. Lateef Ibrahim of Nigerian Compass Newspapers have resorted to using the police to
harass and intimidate those  against the re-election bid.

Penultimate week, the two in league with the Ndagene  Akwu-led National Secretariat backed by armed
police men  held an inauguration even though there was no election in the council.

The Concerned Group have however vowed to use all  legitimate means to flush them out as well as run a
parallel administration until the court decides on the matter.
