Obama: Can he win?
By Chioma Nwachukwu/Washington DC

If only oratory is what wins election in US, then Barrack and his team would not break
any sweat for the fall presidential elections in the USA. This perhaps explains why the first
black flag bearer of a major political party in the US has to do a lot of work in the coming
days in order to actualize his historic ambition.

Obama still has a lot to do until November; he needs to tell the voters about himself and
what he will do about the economic, health insurance, taxes, Iraq war, immigration, war
against terrorism, Iran, N. Korea and so on.
He also needs to come to specifics about
these issues that are very important to electorates.

His vice presidential pick Sen. Joe Biden is no doubt a good pick that would help him
patch up in the area of foreign policy experience and accusation of gross inexperience
from the Republicans. Lest I forget, I was discussing with some friends in LA and one guy
wasn’t buying Obama/Biden ticket. He insisted Clinton/ Obama ticket was stronger,
really? The question of which ticket is stronger is beyond the scope of this piece.

Back on track, I will like Obama to discard his characteristically soft part and come out
hard to truncate McCain’s soaring impetus especially now that he has won back all
skeptic conservatives who haven’t given a nod to his candidature. Some people said he
has to “brother up” and take McCan head on if he wants to win in the fall.

You would recall that since McCain chose the first term Alaska governor Sarah Palin, his
campaign has been rejuvenated  The Republican chairman in Washington, (pardon me, I
forget his name) said the feeling and the mood was as if the Redskin- a Washington based
football team has just won the super bowl.

When you look at polls that are dropping in on a daily basis, one cannot but shiver for
brother Obama about how McCain ratings are shooting up, closing Obama’s wide gap
steadily on all issues that are important to voters. This makes me think the a lot still need
to be done by the Obama’s camp in order to abbreviate McCain’s momentum.

McCain is a well known political maverick who can pull a surprise at any time. He is an
old soldier, a war hero who know how to fight both on the battle field and in a political
war room.

I especially envied McCain’s choice of word in his reaction to historic nomination of
Senator Obama at the Democratic convention in Denver; he said I am taking a break to
congratulate senator Obama on his historic nomination, tomorrow we will back.

It is matter of fact that Obama team has brought dynamism into this election and you
cannot but praised his oratory and great skills in pulling out crowds with his charisma.
However, will this translate into majority of the Electoral College votes in November?
Will his youthful supporters come out and vote for him? Will the dreaded conservative
talk show hosts unable to hurt him? Will he surmount all republican arsenals to win in
November? We are crossing our fingers as we observe how event unfolds until the fall
election.
