Obama makes history, wins US presidential elections
By Oludare Fase | African Examiner | Posted November 4, 2008 | e-mail (editor@africanexaminer.com)
Sen. Barack Obama, a junior senator of the US congress has been elected as the first black president of
the United States. He and his running mate Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware will be sworn in as on Jan. 20,
2009 as the 44th president, and vice president of America.
Senator Obama defeated Sen. John McCain of Arizona in an election that gulped a whopping record sum
of about $6 billion - the two campaigns put together, averaging about $8 per presidential votes.
Though the popular votes between him and his rival were close but he won the electoral college votes in
landslide, as he breezed into victory by winning in key battlegrounds and red state of Virginia, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Iowa and Ohio.
Obama’s message of ‘THE CHANGE WE NEED’ seemed to stick with America people, as he once said
that “this campaign is built on the belief that ordinary Americans, when we work together, can do
extraordinary things” .
On health care, he promised to provide affordable and portable coverage to all Americans, while lowering
costs and improving care by modernizing the US health care system. He saw an opening in agitation for the
withdrawal of American soldiers from Iraq , and vigorously took a swipe at the outgoing Republican
government, as he promised to responsibly withdraw American troops from Iraq .
Acceptance Speech
In his acceptance speech, the president-elect said his first task would be to confront the economic crisis
and the two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan adding that "there are many who won't agree with every
decision or policy I make as president, and we know that government can't solve every problem. But I will
always be honest with you about the challenges we face."
McCain concedes defeat
His rival John McCain called and congratulated him on his victory saying the “American people have
spoken and they have spoken clearly.”
He said "in a contest as long and as difficult as this campaign has been, his success alone commands my
respect for his ability and perseverance. But that he managed to do so by inspiring the hopes of so many
millions of Americans who had once wrongly believed that they had little at stake or little influence in the
election of an American president is something I deeply admire and commend him for achieving."
Road to glory: from Jr. senator to president of the United States
In February 2007, when Sen. Obama announced his presidential bid, many did not give it a big thought.
He was not given any thought because; the Clinton machinery was almost insurmountable and a big
obstacle to cross in the democratic primaries. However, against all odds and long heated primaries,
Obama defeated former first lady Hillary Clinton to be nominated as the presidential flag bearer of the
Democratic Party. And on November 4, 2008, America voters elected him as the 44th and first black
president.
