Nigeria House of Reps Suspends Anti-Speaker’s Lawmaker
By Sunday Oludare Fase published Feb. 26, 2009
The House of Representatives has suspended the leader of anti-speaker lawmakers Rep.
Independence Ogunewe for “unruly behaviour” during the plenary sessions of the house.
The speaker Hon. Dimeji Bankole also announced the removal of Ogunewe as chairman of House
committee on Cooperation and Integration in Africa and membership of any committee during the
14-day suspension.
Ogunewe (PDP Imo) was said to have ignored speaker’s repeated call to return to his seat during
the plenary session of the house, instead of him to return to his seat from a corner where he was
holding talks with other anti-speaker members, the lawmaker walked out of the house chamber with
a loud response “I HAVE HEARD YOU”.
This ‘unruly’ behaviour did not go down with some members of the house as Chief Whip, Reps.
Emeka Ihedioha, Dino Melaye, Godwin Elumelu and others converged to discuss appropriate
punishment for the lawmaker’s behaviour.
Following a point of order raised by Rep. Alhassan Ado Garba, representing Kano State, over the
alleged lack of respect shown to the Speaker and the House by Rep. Ogunewe, the house
unanimously vote to endorse a 14-day suspension of the lawmaker.
