ENUGU NIGERIA (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – The Youth wing of Igbo umbrella body, Ohaneze Youth Council, OYC, has condemned the recent opinion of Nigeria’s Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, in restructuring the country’s federalism.
The VP, had in a recent television programme Tuesday kicked against total restructuring of Nigeria along regional lines, as well as rotational presidency.
But OYC, in a statement signed by Chairman of all the State Chairmen of the council, Mazi Alex Okemiri, on Wednesday made available to newsmen, described the statement as unfortunate.
The group however, regretted that “when some of our elites get into power they are carried away by officialdom to the detriment of the future of their people.
“We insist that only restructuring of Nigeria can address her numerous challenges and not just the fight against corruption alone.
Commenting on the ongoing political logjam in Abia State, the body called on Igbo elders not to keep quiet in the face of the crisis.
It noted that “Igbo culture requires elders not to keep quiet when things are getting out of hand.”
OYC therefore, called for immediate intervention of Igbo elders in the matter, with a view to finding a solution to it.
The group reiterated its call for the empowerment of Igbo Youths, whom according to them “are the least empowered in the country, and that such was responsible for the agitation for Biafra.
The Ohaneze youth lauded the governor Okorocha’s led government in Imo state for hosting the Igbo unity rally scheduled to take place at Owerri, the state capital on Thursday and Friday this week.
