Robbers’ siege: Okiro wants Yar’Adua to close borders.
Ayo Afolabi/ Nigeria

Worried by the siege by men of underworld on the entire country, Nigerian chief police officer, Mike
Okiro is alleged to be mounting pressure on President Umaru Musa
Yar’Adua to consider closure of
some of the nation’s West Africa neighbours borders.

Sources in the police told Africa Examiner that the police was finding it increasingly difficult to curtail
the activities of the bandits who are traced to these borders.

The borders being considered for closure include Chad, Benin Republic and Niger Republic. The
source further said that the renew call by Okiro for the closure was sequel to the arrests of 34 robbers
all over the country who revealed that they have comrade-at-arm in these neighboring countries.

The source also said that 64 assorted rifles and over 6000 rounds of ammunition were recovered
from these robbers adding that this further send jitters down the spine of the police authority who
believe that the recovery may just be a tip of the iceberg of the number of weapons in circulation in
Nigeria.

What is more, the police high hierarchy was said to have been stupefied by the revelations from the
bandits that they had planned to rob 30 new generation banks across the country.

Further enquiry, the police source said, it was discovered that about 1,300 assorted cars worth
several millions of naira were taken to these neighbouring countries by these robbers.

Further insight into why the police was pressurizing Yar’Adua was the fact that the security agencies
of these countries were discovered to be collaborating with the criminals.

Okiro was of the opinion that the closure of those borders would force the government in those
neighboring countries to act by clamping down on the receivers of stolen cars in their country, said
the source.

Such measure had been taken in 2003 by the then President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who ordered
closure of Benin border as a result of the renew armed robbers onslaught thus forcing the Government
of Benin Republic to meet with Obasanjo to pledge its cooperation in tracking down robbers using
Benin as base.
