Two Worshippers Dead in Stampede Over Pope
He Urges Angolan Govt To Fight Poverty
Oludare Fase/USA

A religious exercise to receive anointing from the Pope Benedict XVI then
resulted into mourning for two Angolans  who met their untimely death at a
stampede in Luanda's Coqueiros Stadium during an address by the Catholic
pontiff.

Aside this, about 8 other people were reportedly injured and required
medical assistance as the Luanda stadium was heavily populated by
worshippers who have trooped out in their large numbers to listen and see
the Pope.

Meanwhile, in his message, the 81 year old Pope urged Angolan
government to  fight corruption noting that Africans government must have
"a firm determination to change hearts and finally put a stop, once and for
all, to corruption".

The Pope arrived in the Angolan capital Luanda on Friday from Cameroon,
on the second leg of his African tour.

About two-thirds of Angola's 16 million population are Catholics, while the
country is ranked 158 out of 180 countries on corruption watchdog
Transparency International's 2008 Corruption Perceptions Index.

Pope is due today (Sunday)  to perform a mass for two million people
outside a cement factory.
