Kidnapping: Princewill berates Mark on South-East
Akanimo Sampson, July 23, 2010
FORMER Action Congress (AC) Leader in Rivers State, Prince Tonye Princewill, has
fired at the court of the Senate President, Senator David Mark, saying Mark's
prescription for the security problems in the South-East geo-political zone is a recipe for
anarchy.
With the worrisome spate of kidnapping and violent crimes in the zone particularly in Abia
State, Mark had called for a state of emergency as a way of tackling the menace.
Princewill's Media Consultant, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, who spoke with our
correspondent at the weekend claimed that his boss is of the view that Mark erred in his
bitter medicine.
According to Princewill who is likely to run as Governor Chibuike Amaechi's deputy in
next year's governorship poll on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),
''the call by the Senate can only serve to fragmentize the already fragile state of affairs in
the country.
''He stated that rather than do anything that would threaten the nation’s peace and
further fuel any speculations of an ethnic agenda, in the wake of all the regional
problems that the country has experienced in recent times in relation to the security of
lives and property, the Senate should rather think of exploring for implementation the
option of a National Security Summit to be held in conjunction with all security agencies
and stakeholders to identify the immediate and remote causes of these incidents and by
way of dialogue to proffer solutions in this regard''.
Princewill is calling on the Federal Government to implement poverty reduction strategies
and embark on programs for job creation whilst calling for legislation that would create an
enabling environment for the private sector to expand their operations which would
create more jobs and opportunities that would alleviate the hardship currently evident in
the country.
He said issues that should be brought to the front burner at this time should include:
adequate funding of the Police and other security Agencies; State Police and Civil
society collaboration in curbing crime.
He also felicitated with the four Journalists and their driver and expressed his gratitude to
God that no harm befell them. He commended IGP Onovo and men of the force that kept
up the tempo of rescue until the eventual release of the hostages.
He, however, urged him not to relent in the continued reorientation of the force to
increase citizen confidence in them. Not left out also was the Fourth Estate (Press) who
he commended for their role in ensuring that this case got the mileage it deserved and
called on them to remain unrelenting as they join in the movement towards ensuring a
“Utopia” for all citizens of Nigeria. ENDS
