Security Bar Journalists From Collation Centres In Imo

FROM IGNATIUS OKPARA, Owerri – As part of alleged rigging strategy by the Peoples Democratic party PDP, journalists were on Sunday barred from coming close to collation centres in Owerri, Imo state, by security operatives including men of the Department of State Security DSS, the Police and the Army.

Our Correspondent reports that stern looking uniform men at the gate of the Owerri Municipal Council Secretariat collation centre turned reporters back.

They could not give reasons for their action.

However, the anxious journalists who were at the centres to get the results of the National Assembly and Presidential election results were told to return home and wait until the results were announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Efforts to reach the state Resident Electoral Commissioner,(REC) George Ada, for comments was unsuccessful as he was said to be indisposed to speak with anyone.

Meanwhile elections were conducted Sunday in the polling units where the exercise could not hold on Saturday as a result of non-availability of voting materials.

African Examiner recalled that scores of supporters of the All Progressives Congress APC in the state were arrested and manhandled by security agents at the alleged instance of the opposition People’s Democratic Party PDP.
