Until proven guilty, we stand by Ali Ndume as a member of the Nigerian
Senate, Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe, the spokesperson of the upper chamber
has said.
Briefing newsmen in Abuja, Sen Abaribe noted that though the Senate was
worried that a Senator of the Federal Republic was fingered as a sponsor of a
terrorist group.
He said “the Senate wishes to state very clearly that it has always been in
the forefront of urging the security agencies to do the necessary job to make
Nigeria safe for everyone of us”
However, Abaribe added that “the constitution of Nigeria has a presumption of
innocence and what that means is that every accused person is presumed
innocent until he is found guilty. So, what we are saying is that it is a mere
accusation and we want the due process to be followed.”
Sen. Ndume was arrested on Monday night at about 10:20 pm by the Agents
of the State Security Service, SSS over allegation that he was one of the
sponsors of the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram which has claimed
responsibility for various bombings in Borno, Abuja, and parts of the North.
We stand by Ndume –Senate
