agriculture- Gov. Shekarau
Oludare Sunday Fase
Posted: May 17, 2009
The governor of Kano state Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau has said that his government
is focusing on large scale farming just as he promised to partner with foreign
investors in the area of agriculture.
The governor said this while addressing foreign investors and Nigerians in diaspora
on May 17, 2009 at the Nigeria embassy in Washington, DC.
Mallam Shekarau said “We believe we
should go beyond grain productions or
crop productions, so in this second term
we decided to re-prioritize agriculture to
what we called integrated agriculture,
we now want to privatize by involving big
time large scale farmers and this is
where you will come in and those you
have access to, we now open our doors
to those who want to invest in
agriculture.”
The governor also promised to provide
enabling environment for interested
foreign investors disclosing that his
government has provided more than 3
billion naira for dams and irrigations.
“You may want to know that Kano is the largest irrigation farm state because we
have more dams. To those of you who are into large scale farming or will like to
invest into large scale farming, please you are welcome and if have any access to
any investors tell them Kano is ready to partner with investors in agriculture. we
have voted more that 3 billion naira to rehabilitate our dams to give them high yield
and efficient production.” he explained
The two term governor of Kano state also warned against over dependence on oil
adding that “If we don’t go back to the agriculture, we are heading back to the
doomsday. I have always said we should go back and give priority to agriculture, the
oil might dry up anytime from now. Geologies will say it will last for 50 years, but
these are mere projections.’’
The governor's visit was organised by Zumunta Association, USA, Inc.
