Speaker of the House of representatives, Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and the Ambassador of Ireland to Nigeria, Mr. Patrick Fay, have urged youths, especially adherents of the Catholic faith, to always put service above self, and redirect their energies to efforts that will make Nigeria a greater nation for all its peoples.

The two leaders spoke Friday night at the 2013 Youth Harvest Dinner of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, which held at the Church of Assumption, Asokoro, in the Federal Capital territory.

According to Tambuwal, despite efforts of some misguided elements who are all bent on causing disaffection among the various religions in Nigeria, Nigerians are determined to live together as in peace as brothers and sisters.

He said he was impressed by the work of the Abuja dioces of the Catholic church especially in areas of youth counselling, training of young people to develop their leadership and entrepreneurial skills in order to gain social and moral values as well.

The Speaker said leaders at all levels must continue to do all that is possible for the development of our youth who are the future of this country.

He added: “If we don’t provide them the right education, give them the right upbringing and provide them the opportunity to use their energy and potential, we are not only jeopardising their future but the future of the whole country. I am happy that more and more youth are developing some interest in the way they are being governed. The more our youth can participate in running the country, the more chances they have of making this democracy serve their interests.”

On his part, Ambassador Fay said since his posting to Nigeria three years ago, he has been impressed by the sheer talent of Nigerians and the determination of the people to make things work in their country. He said he has no doubt that Nigeria has what it takes to overcome its challenges.

“The future of Nigeria is with it’s youth, you must remain committed and steadfast at all times in order to achieve you potentials.”

The hightlight of the gathering saw the presentation of award of meritorious service to the Speaker and the unveling of the harvest banner by the Number four citizen.

Other speakers at the the Harvest dinner, tagged ‘An interractive Night with Speaker Tambuwal’, include the DG of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr. Mike Omeri and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Youth and Student Matters, Comrade Jude Imagwe.
