Ten Die, 60 Injured As Flyover Collapses In IndiaAsia, Latest News, World News Thursday, March 31st, 2016
Ten persons have been killed, while several others injured, as a flyover under construction, in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata (Calcutta) collapsed.
Images of the sad incident which occurred Thursday show residents using their bare hands to help those still held under the damaged flyover, which fell on a busy road.
The accident took place near Girish Park, one of Kolkata’s most densely populated neighbourhoods, with narrow lanes; shops and houses built close to one another together.
About 60 injured, some who are in critical condition, have been taken to nearby hospitals.
Emergency teams have been drafted to the area with sniffer dogs, concrete cutters, drilling machines and sensors to detect life, under the debris.
The collapsed overhead is about 2km-long (1.2 mile) and has been under construction since 2009. It has missed several deadlines for completion.
It is speculated that collapsed structure was hit by passers-by, cars, trucks and nearby buildings.
Many vagabonds are also said to have been living in the makeshift homes under the flyover.
An eyewitness said that there was a loud sound which scared those present, when the flyover gave way.
