Tension brews in house of reps over committee chairmanship.
“We are not surprised at this new development”- Bankole

Traditionally members of the Nigeria house of representatives are well  known for
going after their leadership whenever new chairmen of  the house committees are
constituted, as members who supposedly lose out in the power game often vow to pull
down the leadership.

From Speaker Na’Abba to Etteh, no one  escaped the tension that often follows
announcement of committees chairmen. Though, Na’Abba and Masari escaped several
impeachment moves against them but Olubunmi Etteh did not.

Interestingly, moves against leadership of the house, even at the senate, always follow
the same pattern- release of documents about contract awards especially for buying
cars for  either the committees or leadership of the house.

Presently, the current moves against the Speaker, Dimeji Bankole following the recent
announcement of the chairmen of  committees is not unexpected nor strange.

African Examiner gathered that  a  member from Imo state Independence Ogunnewe
was behind the latest moves against the leadership of the house for losing out. Ogunnewe and other anti-Bankole members  are said to be  circulating “falsified” documents against the speaker Dimeji Bankole and other leadership of the house.

Part of the  documents alleged that  the leadership of the house   bought  3Nos.
Mercedes Benz (Treated) S-600 @ N52.8m = N158.4m for Speaker/Deputy .
Speaker - 2Nos. Range Rover (Treated) @ N57.2m = N114.4m for Speaker &
Deputy .Speaker - 1No. Range Rover (Special) @ N30m for Speaker - 1No. Range
Rover V8 @ N27m for House Leader.

However, the Chief press secretary (CPS)  to the Speaker, Mr Idowu Bakare said in
a statement that the documents were false urging the public and the media to disregard
them.

The statement reads in part thus  “there was an undercurrent machination to assault the
integrity of the leadership using issues that relate to the contract award.”

“We are not surprised at this new development, especially when we consider the failed
orchestrated plot to criminalize the purchase of 380 ST Sport Auto cars for
committees of the House.

”We wish to draw the attention of the public and, indeed, the media to this wicked plot
designed to undermine the oversight and anti-corruption, for which the House of
Representatives has been defined.”
