World Oldest Panda Dies At 38 In Hong Kong


BALTIMORE, MD (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – The world oldest and giant panda Jia Jia, as well as ever kept in captivity has died at the age of 38 in Hong Kong.

The death of Jia Jia whose age in human terms was over 100 years, according to officials was announced by the Hong Kong theme park where she lived.

It was gathered that her condition had worsened rapidly, in recently, forcing it to lose appetite.

The Panda was put down by vets at Ocean Park, where she had lived since 1999.
A statement obtained by BBC Chinese, indicated that a Hong Kong government Spokesman thanked her park for providing Jia Jia with care.

The statement also confirmed that the authority was “saddened” by the death.
It would be recalled the park held a high-profile 37th birthday celebration for Jia Jia’s at her enclosure in July 2015.

Panda was born in 1978 in the wild in Sichuan, China. She was handed over to Hong Kong in 1999 to mark the semi-autonomous city’s handover by Britain two years earlier.

Experts confirmed that Pandas normally live up till around 20 years of age in the wild, while survived 25 years in captivity.
