Abia Women Celebrate Accomplishments Under Governor Orji’s Govt


Abia women from all walks of life gathered in Umuahia, the state capital to celebrate their tenacity and accomplishments under Governor T. A. Orji’s led government.

The event, the annual and the sixteenth anniversary celebration of Abia Women’s Day saw the women clad in their different churches, communal and organizational outfits pouring encomiums on Governor T. A. Orji for giving Abia women her pride of place in the annals of the state.

They pointed out the government numerous programmes on health, education, agriculture, political education and empowerment, gender sensitivity and for achieving more than the 35 percent affirmative action in the state as demanded by the Nigerian women under Ochendo le=d administration as worthy of commendation and celebration.

Speaking while declaring the occasion open, Governor T. A. Orji represented by his Special Adviser (Sports), Sir Ejikeme Ikwunze commended Abia women for their tenacity, industry, accomplishments and support to his government.

Governor Orji assured that he would continue to put in place programmes of action in health, agriculture, political education and empowerment for the overall development and benefits of women in particular and Abians in general.

The governor commended his wife for the able mobilization, direction and leadership she has brought to bear positively on Abia women and further extolled her further for the numerous programmes that have positively touched Abia children, men, youth, women and the less privileged which they are proud of.

Earlier in her address, the wife of the governor, Lady Mercy Odochi Orji said that the Day was to reawaken the consciousness of Abia women as home builders, character molders and nation builders and develop their unique qualities which could serve as magic wand in nation building.

Lady Orji stated that it was equally intended to guide them in career choice and family hood in order to make them devoted wives, caring mothers and virtues women in line with scriptural admonition and assist them develop and show exemplary leadership qualities in the likes of famous Aba women riot of 1929, Queen Amina, Mrs. Margaret Ekpo, Mrs. Fumilayo Ransom Kuti among others were noted for.

She commended the Ochendo’s administration for been a formidable pillar of support for Abia women and through his legacy projects and programmes and ensuring the actualization of the more than 35 percent affirmative action in appointive and elective positions for women resulting to more women occupying many appointive and elective positions in all the arms of government.

The wife of the governor while enumerating her achievements for Abia women since her assumption of office eulogized Mrs. Chinyere Ike Nwosu, the wife of the first military administrator of the state for initiating the Abia Women’s Day and called on women to avoid the pull her down syndrome but reawaken the spirit of unity among them for Nation building to be sustained.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon (Mrs.) Nne Nwaejike in her address said that women are the foundation of for Nation building and fundamentals of learning in the family and it was therefore important to strengthen all mechanisms that would put them in advantaged positions and also integrate them into the mainstream of National development in order to promote nation’s building.

Hon (Mrs.) Nwaejike commended the governor for ensuring that in the various arms of government, women are given out-standing recognition by holding top positions.

A member of the state House of Assembly, Hon. (Dr) Kate Maduako who also chair the occasion, described Abia women as resourceful and industrious and advised them to exhibit exemplary motherly roles in the families and other endeavours.

Hon. Maduako pointed out that the wife of the governor has given adequate representation to the womenfolk and positively touched the lives of the less privileged.

The event featured health talk shop on cancer, diabetes, Women in Nation Building and distribution of gifts to the women by the wife of the governor.
