Governor Ugwuanyi Laments Lack Of  Modern Hospital In South East


By IGNATIUS OKPARA, Enugu – Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has expressed worry over lack of modern and befitting hospitals in parts of South East, Nigeria.

He regretted that none of the five states in the region can boast of a 21st century hospitals capable of meeting the health needs of the people in the zone.

Underscoring the need for modern health facilities in the geo political zone, the governor noted that when the diagnostic centre project embarked upon by Enugu State government is completed, it will reduce the current
craving of the people of the zone for medical attention outside the country.

Governor Ugwuanyi stated this over weekend when the management team of Star Deep Water Petroleum Limited, a Chevron oil company and Agbami co-ventures paid him a courtesy in Enugu.

He however, appealed to the group to come to the aid of the area by establishing a befitting hospital in the zone, with a view  to promoting health care delivery for the people.

The governor, equally requested the group of companies to establish a modern library for  institutions of higher
learning in Enugu state so as to facilitate not only teaching and learning, but to encourage research works among the lecturers and students.

He urged the company to provide scholarship to indigent students from the state as part of its corporate social responsibility.

The Governor, commended the company for building and opening a fully-equipped chest clinic complex at the
District Hospital in Enugu-Ezike in Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State to improve the health care delivery in the area.

“I am convinced that you are worthy partner that has touched our hearts and lives of our people, May my good Lord reward you”.

Earlier in his speech,  representative of the Managing Director of the company, Mr. Stan Otuonye, had informed the
governor, that the group was in Enugu State to commission an equipped chest clinic complex  it built at the Ogurute District Hospital, Enugu-Ezike to promote health care delivery in the area.

Mr. Otuonye, who is also a Director in Deep Water Petroleum noted that the group of oil companies had built 24 chest clinics in different parts of Nigeria.

According to him, apart from the chest clinics, several other projects are either on-going or completed by the group
in parts of Nigeria.

He added that the co-ventures have instituted specialized educational scholarship programmes in support of health and engineering manpower development in Nigeria through targeted support.

The Director stated that the group among others is into economic empowerment, through which it assist farmers in increased food production.

He disclosed that Agbami oil field, one of the greatest oil producers in Nigeria is located about 70 miles offshore Nigeria, adding that in line with the principle of deep offshore oil exploration the area is viewed as belonging to the entire country, hence the Agbami Group has been intervening in the areas of education and health across the
country.
