Hope For Certain Categories Of Enugu Inmates As State Parole Board Set To Begin Work


(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Some categories of serving inmates in the custody of various Nigerian Correctional service Enugu state Command Who are lucky may likely experience freedom in no distance time, as the State parole Board has concluded its maiden meeting in Enugu.

Our Correspondent reports that Command’s Controller of Corrections Mr. Obiako Nicholas yesterday held meeting with members of the state Parole Board headed by his Lordship Hon. justice Ihuoma Amanoh (RTD).

According to the Command’s Spokesman, Assistant Superintendent of Corrections (ASC), Ugwu Dympuna, who disclosed this to Newsmen in Enugu, the “meeting was part of effort of the state Command to commence the implementation of provisions of the Nigeria Correctional Service Act 2019.

He explained that for the benefit of the lay man, parole is a conditional release of an inmate from custody who according to the NCOS Act 2019, must have served one third of his sentence and also must have received imprisonment term of fifteen years and above.

“It would be recalled that the Controller General, Haliru Nababa FICMC mfr mni Nigerian Correctional Service had earlier in August inaugurated the parole and mental health board in August 2022.

In her remark, Hon. Justice Amanoh welcome all the board members and encourage them to work as a team in order to “achieve these laudable initiative which is novel, adding that everything about Parole have started, and no going back.

Addressing the board members, the Command Controller Mr Obiako, appreciated them for making themselves available for such a critical National assignment and encouraged them to work as a team so as to ensure that public safety and protection is guaranteed in all the board action.

Also present at the meeting were, Director of public prosecution DPP Enugu state ministry of justice. Mrs Ngozi Ikem Okoye, represented by an official in the Ministry, Okpara perpetual, the State Director of National Directorate of Employment, NDE, Mrs Ezepue Ifeoma.

Others are, the officer incharge of welfare unit, Enugu state
CSC Ugwu Bibian Ada and officer in charge of non- Custodial in the state Command, Ugwu Benjamin as well as all the Parole desk officers across the state Command.

“The meeting had deliberation on how to commence parole in Enugu state” Dympuna hinted.
