Nasarawa Police Arrest Pro – Al – Makura Demonstrators


The Nasarawa state Police Commissioner Mr. Ibrahim Idris has confirmed the arrest over 20 people including a fake police officer over the Pro – Al –Makura protest in Lafia, the state capital and other local government areas on Wednesday and Thursday in which three persons died.

Idris who stated this at a press conference of the state’s joint security committee in Lafia informed the suspects were arrested on Friday for allegedly hijacking the initial peaceful protest and turned it violent.

The state police boss revealed that dangerous weapons such as knives, locally made pistol and other ammunitions were recovered from those arrested. He added that the remaining suspects who had fled were being trailed by the state security operatives.

Commissioner Idris who mentioned that a residential apartment and five business outlets were touched during the protest urged people residents of the state to be vigilant and embrace peace. He warned that rumour should be avoided as this threatens the peaceful co – existence of the state.

He also confirmed to journalists that palpable peace has returned to the affected parts of the state. Idris dismissed speculation which he attributed to media reports that some residents in and around the state capital have started fleeing to the neighbouring towns due to two day siege.

The protest was sparked off owing to threat and serving of the impeachment notice served on the state Governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura by the state’s House of Assembly on the grounds of alleged financial gross misconducts among others. The sack notice was endorsed by 20 out of 24 legislators.
