President Muhammadu Buhari has announced the cash reward of N2 Million each, to members of 1985 under 17 Golden Eaglet squad.
Mr. President made the announcement Thursday at Presidential reception for the outstanding athletes/officials who have done Nigeria proud in recent various sports competitions, inside the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
It would be recalled the team won the maiden edition of the youthful global football tournament hosted by China over three decades ago.
The beneficiaries of the decades’ promise which at last came to reality include: the captain of the squad, Nduka Ugbade; Baldwin Bazuaye; Victor Igbinoba; Jonathan Akpoborie; Fatai Atere; late Kingsley Aikiobare and the rest of the victorious team.
The Thursday announcement was a redeem of pledge made by President Buhari upon the victory of the team, but failed to actualize owing to coup which ousted his Military junta in August 1985.
The event was attended by Government officials, among who was the Minister of Youth and Sports, Bar. Solomon Dalung, who also put the record right, with respect to the reward, which Buhari initially announced to be N200 Million to each of the squad members.
